Guy Ritchie makes good film shocker!

Yes, I've just got back from seeing it, and it's rather good. I'd recommend it.

Oh it's certainly Holmes. Just don't be swayed by the TV versions that dressed him up. It's still Holmes, but it's a different Holmes.

Jude Law as the portly Dr. Watson? (Watson's own description of himself and Holme's mentions it a few times, such as The Sussex Vampire) :?

Whilst Holmes could fight, in most of the stories, he never raises a finger against his opponents.

He was also fanatical about his appearance, when not in disguise and not in his manic depressive state between cases (Dr. Watson's words in the books). The bowler is fine, but the rest of his attire doesn't pass, nor the unshaven look.

Guns - he did use the wall in the flat for target practice, but rarely carried a gun, in the books. In the 40s films he did carry a gun with him, but rarely fired it. He shot the gun more in the trailer than all other films put together! :shock:

The books are very cerebral and not about action. From the trailer, it seems much more about action and not about thinking, which is a shame. All films these days seem to be about action and not about actually thinking things out... :?

A lot of the film is 'between' cases. He's lured into what happens in the film; he's not in someone's employ. He finds himself having circumstance dictated around him.

I can recall him firing a pistol perhaps 3 times in the film. It's certainly not something he's reliant upon. There's one scene which were he to have been all about firearms would certainly have ended much, much sooner.

The film is by Guy Ritchie, and the Holmes story works well with the way Ritchie likes to have a grand reveal or twist at the end. There is still a fair degree of cerebral content, don't worry too much. It's not Transformers.

Interesting. I quite fancy it, but was a bit worried as I'm quite a Holmes fan and, well, it's a Guy Ritchie film.

I was going to watch it anyway, but feel a bit better about it after your extensive review.

Saw it today. Definitely not LA Confidential level of deduction, but certainly smarter than Iron Man.

Downey Jr. is superb, as is Jude Law. Some of the reveals felt a little Murder She Wrote for my liking, but still entertaining enough. As I suspected, a straight setup for the sequel but a good romp with some great acting and a little smarts. Worth seeing.
