I learned:
o- that carrots are only orange because of Dutch patriotism in the 17th century.
o- that cats will sweat through the pads on their paws if they're a little stressed.

What about you?

I've known this for a long time, from the cats leaving sweaty footprints on the vet's table.

I learnt that sprouts grew on stalks. I'm not sure if I have ever wondered how they grew before, but it seems to be trendy in the UK now to buy them on the stalk rather than loose.

You see, I'd seen it before, but never actually twigged it was proper stress-related sweat from the paws.

I did know that carrots should really be purple on the outside, but I didn't know it was the Dutch we should blame for that one.

This Christmas I learned just how much hard work three toddlers can be in one place. Especially when one is going through a biting / hair pulling phase and the other is going through a major overreaction phase!

I don't know if it counts as stupid or not but I learned that 666 is NOT the number of the beast. Early translators of the Bible got it wrong the actual number being 616. Chances of modern Christians owning up to the mistake?

::puts a hand in the air::

I'll own up - they got a few things wrong.

Oh and (sorry Heather) can I take issue with the title? One cannot learn anything stupid as stupidity is defined by an inability or unwillingness to learn, surely?

Things I learned this year that I can only see a salient use for in a somewhat bizarre set of circumstances:

[list][*]Depending on your definition, trifle must or must not contain jelly
[*]Brazil was named after the brazilwood tree, not the other way round.

You may, but I meant "stupid" in the sense my life is no better for having this new information stuffed into my cranium. Most of my life was lived quite happily without knowing why carrots are orange, or whether cats can sweat at all.

:)

I learned that dogs only sweat through their tongues.
I've no idea if this is accurate information.

Dogs don't sweat but use their tongues as passive watercooling devices.

Apparently dogs (like cats) sweat from their front paws.

Did that one make you think about dear old NI too? ;)

I know quite a few people that'll bring a smile to :D

My one is that supposedly panthers are quite leopard-like, and that up close they have the same sort of markings, just in varying shades of black. So I've read anyway...

I learned that XDA Smartphones suck, and that OSX has nano. :D

I seriously thought that nano was a Lunix-only jobbie.
