A mate of mine has just bought a WiFi router on Ebay. It seems to work but he has no idea what spec it is. I could probably tell him where to look on a Mac but he is on Vista.
How to tell if it is 802.11n or not?

I'd say it's more likely to be something in the router config than on his PC. Generally speaking, the connection on the PC end doesn't bother listing what protocol it's using, just how much data is being shipped back and forth. Jon |

connection speed listed mbps / wireless spec 11 = b 54 = g 108/125= g+ 300 = n It will be on the lowest total of all parts in the network I think 802.11a is special as its for video streaming |

It should still have a model number on it somewhere. If not, then the web gui will say. Most routers, you can set the wireless mode. So basically, ask the box. It will know what it is!! |

a just runs at 5.0GHz rather than the more usual 2.4GHz. It can be worth using if you are getting interference from other devices operating at 2.4GHz such as phones, baby monitors etc. It's certainly not just for video streaming, although it does have pretty good bandwidth capabilities if memory serves. |

Didn't the xbox wireless adaptor use 802.11a to avoid interference? |

That is the problem. It is running very slow, but the box says 802.11n it is supposedly made by Belkin but at less than a tenner it could easily be a Blekin (sic) copy from China. Or the slowness could be due to some crap he picked virus wise, or it could be a Vista glitch. Are folk saying that there is no way to tell? |
