Technically, I have the day off.

Practically, I just received an email I need to deal with. It's regarding support for a 24/7 medical services company, and I don't want anyone to die just because I had the day off. I can either deal with it myself, or interrupt my boss's holiday with his family. I think the former option is the least painful in the long run!

So I was wondering, how many people here can truly go home and not still be at work? No playing catch-up or dealing with emergencies? Just go home and *relax* ??

*gets back to work*

My first weeks holiday with my new company, I ended up on the 'phone or going in on 4 of the 5 days! :(

Technically I'm not on call, but if there is a problem, I will generally be contacted and have to sort things out. We are supposed to have an external company which takes over support when I'm not there, but I've not been impressed so far.

Unlucky man, at least it's sorta relaxing work? Silver lining and all?

But props to you for being dedicated =)

Make sure you get paid for it JJ ;)

I'm off... predictable as I have no fixed job

Getting on with my client/server implementation of pong though :)

In my old job I got paid about £20 a day for being on-call, which happened about one week in five.

In this job, I'm on a fixed salary. No overtime, no on-call, and frankly the pay isn't particularly good.

It's a lot better than being on the dole though, and they're pretty flexible when needs must.

I really should get on with this job rather than complain about it

Not me. :D

I really should have made the most of not being in work today by staying up and partying last night.
But everyone I would have done that with is in work today.
The only day we close is Christmas Day, so there's always someone 'on call' and usually on site.

Great. Because my stupid internets are throttled down from 8meg to 1meg I'm now having to wait 1 hour 40 minutes for a download which would have only taken 15 minutes a few months ago.

Roll on March when the contract runs out, although I have no idea who to go with then. No anywhere with a 100GB fair usage and no obvious contention..??!

Unless I'm being paid for doing overtime type things then work very much stays at work.
It's not like I could do my job from home anyway, which does help :D

Only exception is if it is combined with flexitime and convenient for me.
