Post subject: | New Phone |
I was always a bit of a gadget freak when it came to getting a new phone with all the bells and whistles. The thing is though as the novelty wears off I tend to use it for what it is... a phone. Phone calls and texts are the only thing I use my current phone for. On that basis when I upgrade this month I thought I'd forget the gadgets and stuff and stick to something small and light and useable. That changed when I realised I really need a compact camera for taking snapshots. I'm not talking high quality just a £100-£150 price point. I'd love top splash out on something better but cant justify the cost having a DSLR too. On that basis I was going to opt for a Sony C905. It supposed to have the best camera on a phone yet which is perfect for what I need (occaisional snapshots). Only I looked in the daily rag today and saw a Samsung i8910 HD. AMOLED screen, 8MP and 720p video. Yummy! Anyone know anything about this phone or could recommend it? Any other thoughts or suggestions? |

Oli's had snags with his 905 and my mate at CPW echoes that. That said, I have a K850 (which is constantly in for repair and has been the bane of my existence for 3mths) which has an EXCELLENT 5mp camera and kicks the ass of any other phone I've seen. So I can only imagine the 905 camera will be market leading as well. Also, let me just remind you that you've just mentioned 720p video on a phone. Need I say more? |

Gimmick much? I like my memory on my phone free for useful stuff or the odd snap, 720p video will eat that esp as it wont be well encoded because it's on a phone..... Why justify a DSLR also, you can get a mini-dslr style camera like a http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electro ... type=genre and the lens would be much better I think, as well as a proper optical zoom. |

As I said I already have a DSLR so am not going to spend £100+ on a compact just to take the odd snapshot e.g. taking pics on nights out with mates to upload to Facebook, when I can get something that will do the job for free - like the 905 phone. Also, let me just remind you that you've just mentioned 720p video on a phone. Need I say more? There's apparently some pretty decent video from the Samsung phone @ 720p. It supports the relevant codecs, DIVX, etc. OK its never going to match a 'proper' HD video camera but I wouldnt be making movies on it, its just for fun. The fact its free (depending on contract) makes it worth considering IMO. Its got 8GB built in and will support upto 32GB (SDHC I presume) too. I'm definately curious about it. Hopefully they'll be some proper reviews out in a day or two. |

I misread that that you can't justify getting that AND a DSLR camera, not that you already own one. I think it's a gimmick tbh, will eat memory (bearing in mind 500mb for 10 minutes is entirely possible on a GOOD encoder, probably a lot higher in all honesty on a phone) and quality....well I dunno how good it will be... |

Here's another thought for you. What about SIM only monthly contracts, with your existing handset? I'm sure somebody here did that a little while ago. I'm seriously considering it; if CPW can get my 850 working, or supply me with a new 902. |

I could go SIM only but this phone is at the end of its life! The thinking was as I need to upgrade anyway get the phone which is thought to have the best camera (for a phone, not generally) and save myself £100 on the price of a fairly basic compact. The new Samsung has thrown (HD) video into the mix thats all. I know its a bit gimmiky but some say the quality isnt that bad (im going to search for some clips tonight online), and well, its free at the end of the day! I certainly wouldnt be losing anything. I suppose I need a review. I've got a couple of weeks anyway. |

I'd still recommend the Omnia, which uses Windows Mobile. The only concern I have is that, with a new version of Min Mobile coming soon, will an upgrade be made available? |

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8910_omnia_hd-review-349.php Here you go. Looks like it could be good. I'm loosing interest in the whole phone thing, but if you want a good one, this certainly seems to be on the list. |

Well personally, I think Symbian vs. Windows is a preference thing, but hey. I prefer my phone's without an "OS". Then there's less to go wrong. Of course, you don't get all the "amazing" features then. |

This one has a Symbion S60. I havent used a Samsung for a while though so dont know how good or bad their OS is. There's some sample video here too: http://blog.mobiles.co.uk/new-phones/th ... -i8910-hd/ I think if you see it for what it is (i.e. a free phone) the quality is pretty good. I really think this could be the one as long as the Orange contract is suitable. Sorry Sony 905! |

Technically every phone has an OS... just depends how advanced/basic it is compared to others ![]() |

Hence my parentheses! I know what you mean, but these "smart" phones have seen nothing but snags since there introduction a few years ago. Apple make theirs work, but at a cost of crippled functionality and proprietoryness. Same old Apple flavour. Haven't tried Android yet though, so maybe there's hope there? |
