L.A. police investigate death of Brittany Murphy
December 20, 2009 | 12:51 pm

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of actress Brittany Murphy.

Police have been dispatched to Cedars-Sinai and to Murphy’s home in the tree-lined hills of West Hollywood. Police sources emphasized that their inquiry was preliminary, adding they could not say whether it would point to any criminal conduct.

Murphy, 32, died early today after going into cardiac arrest, law enforcement sources said. L.A. city firefighters responded to "a medical request" at Murphy's home in the 1800 block of Rising Glen Road. Murphy was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Born in Atlanta, Murphy moved to Burbank with her mother at age 13. Her film break came in the movie "Clueless" (1995), in which she starred opposite Alicia Silverstone.

Murphy has made dozens of other film appearances, including in "Girl Interrupted" (1999), "8 Mile" (2002), "The Dead Girl" (2006), and "Across the Hall" (2009). She also was featured as the voice of Luanne in the animated TV series "King of the Hill."

Murphy specialized in playing characters who were troubled teenagers or mentally disturbed, according to a biography on industry website Internet Movie Data Base.

Murphy was married in 2007 to British screenwriter Simon Monjack, the website said.

I'm pretty gutted - I thought she was a great actress with a promising future. Always found her interesting to watch.

That's a total shock, hard to believe she is dead at the age of 32. It's sad news indeed. She was great in Clueless; Girl, Interrupted; 8 Mile and particularly in Sin City. R.I.P.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if her death at 32 might have something to do with a lifestyle not unlike her character in Spun. Still, pretty crap.

Watched Girl Interrupted again about a week ago

RIP.

Can't say I'd actually heard of her, as an actress. She never got the fame that her co-stars did. Always a shame when a young life is taken from us. :(

Can't say I've heard of her, but it's always sad when someone who seemingly had a lot more to give dies so young. R.I.P.

People don't just drop dead at thirty two. I'm guessing drugs.

Umm they do. A friend of mine collapsed and died at 32 and he was fit and healthy. Anyone can die at any time.

Shame about Britney. I liked her too.

They do. Sudden death syndrome or sudden arrithmyia death syndrome worldwide affects tens of thousands of people under the age of 40 every year

Yes they do. Blood clot on the lung did for one of my cousins.
Massive shock all round.

Regrettably I'm sure the reasons of BM's death will be plastered all over the newspapers and internet as soon as it's know.

It's amazing how the world works - Heath Ledger, Brittany Murphy, Steve Irwin...dead. Amy Whitehouse & that pillock from Babyshambles...regrettably still alive.

For the friend of the family, it was an undiagnosed heart condition.
Died in the bath, as his wife was getting ready for work. Younger than me.
