Last night I was watching University Challenge on BBC iPlayer on my MacBook Pro. I came out of full screen after it finished, closed the lid and put it onto my desk. About 30 seconds later I re-opened it to do something else but the screen didn't come back on. Sometimes this happens if you re-open the lid too quickly whilst it is still going to sleep so I left it a while but still nothing. Then I turned it off (held down the power button) and turned it back on but still nothing. Tried again this morning and again nothing. I bought the MBP in October 2007. In October 2008 the battery had gone and was replaced. In about April 2009 the CD drive started acting up and not reading CDs properly. In October 2009 the new battery went again with exactly the same problem as the old one. Now this. The MBP hasn't been badly treated and has never been dropped and the screen has never shown any signs of even remotely going dodgy. I know that some of you guys know stuff about the expected lifetime of goods stuff and was wondering how you might go about trying to raise a case for this. Any help would be great. Thanks Oliver |

I had the vertical lines issue with my iMac when it was 18 months old. After toing and froing between support and the local reseller/repair centre (no Applecare no repair unless you pay) I wrote an email explaining my predicament to the local Trading Standards office. Within the week I had a reply, with an attached form letter that showed me how to proceed. I duly rewrote the form letter with my details on the dotted lines and within a couple of weeks Apple had agreed to the repair. I had to pay bench time to the repairer, but I considered this an acceptable compromise, Better than the stone wall I had been up against. The issue was widespread with long threads on the Apple discussion boards, some got free repairs, others like me had to pay a fee. But worth the effort in the end. |

I've only just got my first MBP (well Jessica has it), so from Apple's viewpoint, I don't know. But my Acer Extensa is 2004 vintage and still manages over 2 hours on the original battery (2.5 - 3 when new) and it hasn't shown any problems with the DVD drive etc. My desktop is 2002 vintage and hasn't had any problems. I'm hoping my iMac and the MBP show similar levels of reliability. The iMac 24" (Oct. 2006) hasn't had any problems yet... |

You can definitely expect a premium laptop like a MBP to last in excess of two years, the only problem is you might end up in the County Court to get Apple to take appropriate action. |

We're still using iBook G4s here and they're chugging along very nicely thankyouverymuch. Noah was using them when he went on the arc *sniggers* Seriously they're 7 years old now. |

I'm hoping Polly will last a fair few more years yet. Unfortunately I may have to spend my bonus (assuming I get it) on fixing her (user stupidity), not putting it towards a nice chunk of glass and a weekend somewhere nice, as I'd hoped. Hopefully there'll still be some money left though. |
