Okay, so I’m going to get the train up to Derby as you all know on the 29th of this month.

I was just wondering a few things.

I need to take a sleeping bag and pillow and stuff, I think I have a big enough travel bag to put my sleeping bag, pillow and clothes in for the weekend, but I’m a little confused as to what you are allowed to actually take on the train with you, are there size and weight restrictions?

Also, I’m going to be taking my laptop with me, so will there be free wireless on the trains, as it’s a 2.5 hour journey or will it just be like a normal train? I’ve put table down as a requirement, so I can lean my laptop on there, but I was just wondering is all. The ticket I have has no changes so it’s a straight through run.

Could anyone just give me the jest of things, I’m a bit oblivious to train travel, I normally just drive.

Thanks.

The only restriction on weight is what you can caryy on board :D

As for size I would say the size of the door restricts you there.

There is normally some kind of luggage rack to store your stuff on.

As for internet. When I travel with NXEC trains I get free wifi. Make sure you have a window seat and there should be a plug too :D

Nope ( extra luggage racks at end of each carriage )

Not sure what you mean - which train company is it with ?

You may be lucky if its FGW unless its first class unlikely

When I go up to Aber I have a 60ltr bag which I keep between my legs or on the chair next to me, I personally refuse to put it in luggage racks as I have seen thigns being nicked.
Two of my trains are three hours long, no internet for me, so I'm guessing there will be no internet on a 2.5hr journey...

I hate you

When I used to commute from Reading to London, I always made a point of sitting in any seat upon which a bag had been placed. Once the bag had been moved, of course.

As mentioned watch for scallys nicking stuff. I once had my bike taken on a train from Hooton to Liverpool. Was gutted as the person who took it appeared to disappear (along with the bike), probably someone who worked on the train !

No restrictions at all except for bicycles.

Depends on which train company you use.

How exactly did he appear to disappear? Was this a Star Trek "beam me up" moment, or did he shimmer out of view, like in Blake's 7, or did he just blink out of view, like that baby rabbit near the end of Bambi?

I think the public need to know :P

Also, is anyone else mis-reading the title of this as "Time Travel Restrictions" ? ;)

What I meant what he/she was a crafty [LIFTED] and I couldn't find him or her which made me think they were hiding in the train itself.

If you want to sit there, fine, I'll move my bag between my legs, I have no problem with that :) But I refuse to put it where I can't reach it quickly or potentially can't see it.

Eep!

Something I actually know the answer to!

No limit to size and weight, though as mentioned previously it's a good idea if you can fit it through the door! If you can't carry it all you can arrange for one of the station staff to help you with your luggage at either end of the journey or find one of the train-crew and they'll be willing to help most of the time (Helps if you're particularly attractive and single-looking - I once helped a girl who had four suitcases... FOUR SUITCASES).

Should be free wifi if you're on a national express train. As you're travelling to Derby chances are that it won't be though. Definately won't be NXEC, But could be NXEA(nglia). Virgin/Arriva or whatever they're called now that they've been sold to loads of companies have hotspots on them but you have to pay.

"In the interests of safety and security please check your luggage regularly". Heh heh... But do that.

May I just point out, Derby = awesome.

Transfer to the Matlock train and come and meet up with me. :D

A train which runs for that long will likely have plugs next to the seats for charging etc, as for free wireless, some trains don't have any wireless, virgin trains have paid for unless you're a t-mobile customer, and I'm yet to meet a train with free wifi.

If you're booking a seat you might want to get one near the end of the carriage as this is where you may have to store your stuff, and I always kept a very good on my stuff during the five and a half years I used the trains nearly weekly; (I was in the armed forces, I couldn't drive and found military personnel company awful). Also as noted elsewhere on the forum, you're pretty, and asking some tall bloke, or as Angelic mentioned a member of train staff/crew, they could put your luggage in the overhead storage, though you might then need help getting it down too ;). They can hold quiet large items, as I used to take a 100L rucksack up and down the country.
Oh, and definitely no size or weight restrictions, other than what you can carry and bicycles. I took the previously mentioned very heavily loaded 100L rucksack and a boxed full tower case, that was steel, on the train, twice. No problems, except my ability to grip the box diminished as I crossed London on the tubes and the dealing with getting my stuff on and off the train(a full tower case boxed up is not a small, or light, item).

As noted, you should find out who you will be travelling to see if they offer such a service. Other than that, if you have a contract phone and are on the three network, then for £5 you can get unlimited web access and you only have to add it on for a month. Just an option I thought that I would suggest as you can then also use the laptop at your destination, should you not have wifi access there.

Give yourself time at departure point as you'll need to find your way to the right platform; the staff should be helpful enough in that regard.
