As I've commented elsewhere, the problem with getting the public behind the idea of secularism is that you're attempting to get them to behind the idea of absence.
Which, amusingly, is almost zen like in someways.
I must go and meditate on this and reach out to the beyond... ooohhhmmmmmm....
