An additional point about salary. It isn't the be all and end all. There are other aspects to compensation that should be taken into consideration:
- is it a permanent (as opposed to a short contract) position?
- are there any other benefits that mitigate the lower salary (like a good pension scheme, medical insurance, free childcare e.t.c.)
- how quickly is the salary likely to go up? For instance, is there a pay rise if you complete a probationary period successfully?
- if it's a training type position then are you guaranteed to get a proper job at the end of it?

Also consider realistically how long you think you'd stay in the job if offered it and how it will enhance your CV if you don't plan on staying long. It's rare for people to have a job for life these days so if you're only planning on staying for a year or two but will have better career prospects as a result then a salary below your current expectations isn't necessarily a problem.

In any case good luck with the phone interview.
From darkness we came
To darkness we will return
But for however brief a time
We burn with passion and fire
Enough to eclipse a thousand suns

Its a one year program after which you have to apply to move up the ladder (which would be the salary I'm looking for now). I think you are correct, see how this goes and if I do get a face to face interview discuss it then. Well *fingers crossed* I shall let you know after I have the phone interview on Monday.

Is this an actual telephone interview, or one of those dreadful, robotized "use the keypad to indicate how strongly you feel about the following statements" screening systems?

Easier to get a job from a job. Fisrt step is the hard one, a bit of experiance in the workplace is a big bonus. Might be worth the lower starting salery.... and delays hving to start paying back student loan perhaps.

Would rather not do Gates, but currently can't avoid that.

Oh good, those screening efforts are awful, I've only had to endure one, a few months ago, but once was enough.

I haven't had a proper telephone interview, all mine have been face to face. But, perhaps it is a good thing, interviewees are invariably nervous sitting in a strange office facing three strangers. Over the phone, it might not be so stressful and may allow them to get a better sense of your personality.

Best of luck.

Hmms, I think it went OK. I don't hold out too much hope though.

I spoke slowly for me (average for most people) and I gave solid enough answers to his questions and managed to ask him a few when he asked me if I had any. Unfortuantly I didn't inspire myself, so chances are I didn't inspire the interviewer.

Oh well, he said I will know with 5 working days if I've been short-short-listed.

My Dad agrees with you. That is why he has developed, alongside several psychologists, etc... a psychometric test that isn't possible to cheat on and provides the same (regulated by law) level of accuracy with around 50 questions.

They are couplet questions i.e.

"When working in a team do you prefer to...

Take the lead............................Follow a leader"
As a very rough example.

The scale goes from 0.0 to 10.0 however all you have is a slider with no scale to position in between the two options.

Personally, I'd be a bit worried about working for a company that employs them. Still, better than the graphologists I suppose.

BTW if you do suffer a psychometric and are asked by an HR bunny where you'd put yourself on a scale whilst pointing at a graph; they get really, really confused if you ask if the scale is linear or logarithmic.
