This is the story so far... I'm looking at getting a new phone, and since we've pretty much decided that we don't really need video calling any more I've had a chance to look at some handsets I hadn't considered before.

We, (me and Mrs. V) had a look at a few phones and we are contemplating getting the iPhone 3GS 16GB model, so the question, (in case you didn't see the subject) is did you get an iPhone and did you regret it?

Can you give me some more information from an owner/ex owner perspective?

We may well end up going back to the shop tomorrow...

I've never bought an iPhone but I used my Dad's original iPhone 2G after he upgraded.

I absolutely loved it! It was the first phone on which I actually used the calendar function. The apps are really cool too, lots of free ones if you don't want to spend anything,

And then it got struck by a fairly common problem (with that gen of iPhone) where a 1inch line 1/4 down from the top of the screen stop responding to touch.

Effectivley stopped the phone from working altogether.

It was out of warranty so I didn't get it repaired and I've been misisng it ever since.

My options for my next phone are either the next iPhone (if/when it comes out) or the Google Nexus One or the Sony Ericsson X10. But the top of the list is the iPhone at the moment.

So, no, no regrets from me but I didn't actually BUY it in the first place.

I should also point out that, since video calling is no longer such an issue I am taking a renewed look at the HTC HD2

I'm looking at some comparative views now, but has anyone got any opinions on the pluses/minuses of each...?

By the way, I happen to like Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 is meant to be even better so please don't start slagging off WinMob, because this thread isn't the place for that particular arguement.

My Dad has a HTC HD2 and while I haven't used it very much I had a quick play.

The screen is gorgeous to look at and it seems pretty nippy with opening programs etc...

Brought the 3GS as a xmas gift for the GF, she already had a really good contract on O2 so I brought the pay and go version and she uses her current sim.

All I can say is she's over the moon with it, and when she leaves it laying about I pick it up and have a play, it’s great.

She uses it when she jogging (for music and an app that tells her miles run, what route she went, steps per mins and loads of other stuff), facebook , sat nav, games, emails, internet and the texting.

I'm now thinking of changing over to an iphone when my contract runs out in June.

I have a Pay and Go iPhone, and I love it. It’s the first mobile phone I have felt happy using - a decent screen, lots of apps and, as you would expect, it works seamlessly with my Mac.

I have had all the iterations of the iPhone and I can say that the iPhone 3GS is very good (i have the 32Gb version).
Plus points is the Gui is very well done, the integration of iPod and phone is done very well. the app store.
negative points: cant bleeding save files onto the phone whilst browsing. the app store. multi tasking for all apps. Apples demonic control problem. iTunes
But overall i will almost certainly getting the next version

3G iPhone user here and I'm incredibly happy with it.

Love my iPhone. I use it more than my computer and television combined.

It is the best gadget I have ever owned.

You do have a "walled garden" but that is not all bad. The Android platform for example has had problems with apps that steal financial data. Google have had to pull an number of them.

The vast range of apps and accessories make the iPhone certainly worthy of consideration.

Battery life can be an issue, the iPhone does multi-task with the Apple apps and this can eat into your battery. If I don't charge it every night I am in trouble the next day. For lighter use this will be much less of an issue.

I swear I've no idea what other people do with their iPhone to get such low battery life.
I take images, I alter those images, I upload these images to Flickr. I make calls. I text, a lot.
I only need to charge my battery every 4 or 5 days.
Never have I needed to charge it one day and then again the next.

I bought a 2g, couldn't get on with it, they may be better now, but the lack of physical keyboard/pad was a killer for me so traded it in to CEX (and made £10 profit too)

Mark, email is usually the killer. If I have push email on my X1 the battery wont last a day, turn it to sync 4 hours or 2 hours and it lasts 2 to 4 days

A-ha! At last an answer that I can say won't effect me because I don't use e-mail on miPhone.

I also am always showing the thing off so I have GPS always on and yes I do Email a lot.

I had an htc Touch Pro, which was a better phone (functionality wise) than the original iPhone, but the 3GS is head and shoulders above it.

Battery life is poor, but I tend to use the iPhone more than I did the TP - I listen to podcasts through the speaker in the car or in bed, for example. (I get about 2 days out of it, if I don't play any games. If I play games, I need to recharge it in the evening.)

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are the iphone battery killers, constantly on searching for new and existing connections. The Gf has both on constantly and the battery will last just over 2 days although she charges it most nights.
