As title. I've had Blackberry owners extolling the virtues of "push e-mail" to me, but I have no idea what this means. My Hero bongs every now and again with the sound of new e-mail arriving, is this push e-mail, or is this different? Please put it in layman's terms. Yours, a very confused L_U. ![]() |

It's the difference between a phone checking at regular intervals whether there is a new e-mail, or the server informing the phone that there is a new e-mail available right away. My phone is set to check for new e-mail every hour. It might mean I get to read an e-mail 59 minutes earlier if I have it set to push. Then again, I could just set it to check every 5 minutes, then the benefit would only be 4 minutes. |

So, to paraphrase Nick, it's the difference between controlling your life, or letting others control it for you. ![]() |

Nick's basically summed it up. pop3 is pull email as the client makes the request Push email is sent to the client by the server. Push email also has a permanent connection between client & server |

Oh right OK, thanks for this. I think I'm happy with my phone checking every 5 minutes. |

I tend to "pull" - I prefer to check my emails when I want to. |

Just to give you an idea, with push email I get emails approx. 5s after they've been sent. Pretty useful if you want to have an email conversation with emails flying back and forth... |

Push eats battery power too. Well, it seems that way on the iphone. |

Yep. It eats about an extra 5-7% a day in battery power, in GPRS/EDGE, more if you leave the phone in 3G mode - 3G is a battery hog anyway, so I only turn it on when I actually need it, which is about once every 5 or 6 weeks at the moment... |
