As title. I've had Blackberry owners extolling the virtues of "push e-mail" to me, but I have no idea what this means.

My Hero bongs every now and again with the sound of new e-mail arriving, is this push e-mail, or is this different? Please put it in layman's terms.

Yours, a very confused L_U. :?

It's the difference between a phone checking at regular intervals whether there is a new e-mail, or the server informing the phone that there is a new e-mail available right away.

My phone is set to check for new e-mail every hour. It might mean I get to read an e-mail 59 minutes earlier if I have it set to push.

Then again, I could just set it to check every 5 minutes, then the benefit would only be 4 minutes.

So, to paraphrase Nick, it's the difference between controlling your life, or letting others control it for you.

Nick's basically summed it up.

pop3 is pull email as the client makes the request
Push email is sent to the client by the server.

Push email also has a permanent connection between client & server

Oh right OK, thanks for this. I think I'm happy with my phone checking every 5 minutes.

I tend to "pull" - I prefer to check my emails when I want to.

Just to give you an idea, with push email I get emails approx. 5s after they've been sent. Pretty useful if you want to have an email conversation with emails flying back and forth...

Yep. It eats about an extra 5-7% a day in battery power, in GPRS/EDGE, more if you leave the phone in 3G mode - 3G is a battery hog anyway, so I only turn it on when I actually need it, which is about once every 5 or 6 weeks at the moment...
