Bit of an unusual "problem".

I've been looking for some paper around the 100gsm mark for printing photos - doesn't have to be perfection, just as long as it's better than the usual photocopier stuff. However, it seems both my Epson SP 900 and SX-somethingorother don't like the very smooth printing surface and won't feed the paper reliably. They work fine if you turn the paper over and feed it rough side up, but the print quality is hopeless.

So what do you use and where do you get it from?

Let me get this straight, your photo printer doesn't like feeding photo paper? Or are you after more general paper that photos don't look totally terrible on?
What have you tried?

I don't have an inkjet printer but I found Xerox Colotech+ 90gsm is fairly good paper for a wide variety of uses. Works well on my Dad's HP printer for general printing but I would think it's probably a bit thin for high coverage inkjet photos.

If I'm printing photos I always use FujiFilm Satin Photo Paper.

It won't feed photo-quality paper (the cureent stuff is 102gsm, smooth white on the printing side and rougher slightly off-white on the other). Epson 360dpi photo paper works, but it's a bit on the expensive side. Neo Bright White A4 matt 100gsm and Colourway Inkjet matte coated 120gsm both refuse to feed properly.

Is there not a manual feed try that you can use which cuts down on the amount of bending the paper has to do to travel through the printer?

That would be too easy. All it has is the normal angled sheet feeder. I think it's getting on it's last legs - I've had it several years so it may be time for a replacement.

If it's getting on a bit then that's a distinct possibility. Even laser printers can have trouble with paper feed as they get older (there are a couple of old laserjet 4000's at work with this problem).
If the printer(s) are a few years old then a new one will probably give you a decent step up in print quality as well as having fewer print problems.

have you thought of cleaning the platen using some platen cleaner.. this is what it is for!

First thing I did was dismantle the feed mechanism and clean the rollers - I think the rubber coating has probably lost it's "stick" and can't grasp the paper properly.

Platen cleaner tends to replace the 'stick'. It is slightly oily & has worked for me many times .. it is also great at cleaning the little ball on mac mice.

Did you use this product or something else?

I have some Fuji paper that 'slips' when feeding sometimes. Maybe the rollers on my printer are wearing? The HP stuff feeds ok though. I find putting a good few sheets at a time and separating it one by one before it goes on helps.
