It's been a while so I thought I'd have a go at using my old favourite keyboard layout. I haven't changed the actual physical keyboard yet though. Does anyone else still use the Dvorak layout? I'm thinking about changing the actual layout now. I'm quickly getting the speed back. I know that when I was using it properly (even at work) I quickly picked the speed up. Anyone? Phew! This took a long time to write! |

Well that didn't take long. I'm nom on a full Dvorak setup! LOL! Still slow at the moment but hopefully I should begin to pick up speed the more I use it ![]() |

I'd like to try one, but I can't find one without having to buy it. |

I know Rusty used to use Dvorak. I looked at it, but I switch between machines all day long, going between UK, US and German layouts is enough for me. |

What is Dvorak layout? I saw the title of the thread and thought it was some sort of musical masterpiece! |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard It is supposed to be a more natural layout than the artificial QWERTY, which was designed to slow typists down on manual typewriters. |

Lots of people think QWERTY was designed to be quick but like Dave said it was designed for typewriters. All the most commonly used letters (especially letter pairs such as Q and U) are placed far apart so when typing very fast the arms of the typewriter didn't jam. DVORAK is designed to put all the most commonly used letters right under your fingers along the middle row of the keyboard. If you can persevere with it then you will very quickly become faster with DVORAK than with QWERTY. |

Yeah, with most keyboards you can pop the keys off and swap them around. Then you just need to change the keyboard layout on the OS side but most OSs now come with native DVORAK support. |

Sorry for my lateness... I still use Dvorak - in fact I never stopped from when Foggy and I experimented back in the DUMP. I love it. |

Update: I got tired of having to swap keyboards so that my girlfriend can use my 'puter..... .... (impending smoky death).... .... so what I've done is re-arrange my PS2 keyboard to Dvorak and then write the Qwerty letters on in marker. It's not my best work but it does the job. It also means that if I'm doing something low- level, I can use Qwerty and I don't need the USB. ![]() |

UPDATE: I've just finished making a set of stickers to go on my multimedia keyboard. ![]() Each key has all four levels of Dvorak layout on it plus levels 1&2 of UK QWERTY in the bottom right (I am such a geek ![]() ![]() |
