Was quite surprised at the price, especially considering it's Samsung...

It seems to get good write-ups too. If I didn't have my PS3, I'd probably get one TBH. :)

WHAT! :o  :o
This whole hi-def stuff is really expensive, especially seeing as it seems to be more and more common...I was looking in Tesco today and noticed they had more Blue-Ray disks than they did DVDs...

Don't get me wrong, I won't be buying one, but it's definitely the cheapest I've seen on my net travels ;)

My sister's first DVD player was a £90 Goodmans - and it still works :o

Yes but will you use it?

I got a Sony BR-player about a year ago (£200 I think) and since then I have a grand total of 3 BR-DVD's as they are still stupidly expensive when compared to normal DVD's and whilst the quality of the picture is better I begrudge paying around 80% more for them.

80% more? Most releases these days the price difference is no more than £4 in my experience, which for some films I would not hesitate to pay :).

I'm tempted to ask why you even bought it in that case, but we've all been there with some gadget or other ;)

This is partly why I bought a PS3 (the other reason was it was bought in anger over a failed laptop delivery).

I'm quite happy with the PS3 as a blu-ray player. I buy the discs on Amazon or in Asda, where most of them are £15 - when you consider a new DVD release is still £10 - £12, it's not much of a premium.

Very tempted to get the Sony internal blu-ray drive from Novatech for £50 - its a reader only, but I already have a DVD-R/RW.

It really gets on my nerves that they cost so much more.

I'm too young to remember the VHS to DVD transition, so I don't know how much of an increase there was then. Is it about the same this time round?

I don't see myself ever owning a Blu-Ray player. I've never owned a DVD player (although I do own an Xbox), and I only own about 4 or 5 DVDs, which I watch on my computer.

Well, I don't own a player and I've not bought a disk but it still irritates me that they can be so arrogant.

I think DVDs are over-priced, never-mind BDs or what ever they're abbreviated to.

For a fiver each I'd probably have dozens!

I keep an eye out for bargains. I just bought 4 BR's from Play for 11 quid each...
Some films aren't really worth getting on BR though - heavily character/dialogue based stuff doesn't really justify the technology compared to upscaled DVD. However I've got Planet Earth on BR and frankly, it's so much better than watching it on TV it's like it's a different programme.

Planet Earth on Blu ray is simply stunning... i remember watching the first disc and the waterfalls, the snowy peaks, the rainforests... i think i'll just stop there lol... however i will point out that the £25 it was on play's sale makes it incredibly good value imo.

I tend to only buy discounted blu-rays and amazon tend to have good 3 for 2 deals meaning that usually they end up around £10 max. each and can go as low as £6-7 each which imo is rather good.

Also just bought a second hand Dark Knight/Batman Begins boxset for just £16 (seems like delivery alone set him back £5.42 since he sent it RMSD :?) so quite happy with that :D (the price, not the fact he spent so much on the delivery... i only asked for recorded but props to him for making it RMSD).

Also i tend to check out the AVForums Movie Reviews which have a "Picture" section that just discusses how the picture holds up either to standard def. or just in general. IMO is very useful for me in decided whether or not the Blu-ray version is worth it over a normal version which could be upscaled.
