If you are floating in cash and can just buy a car on a whim this might be of interest to you.

iPhone app

Technology amazes me.

So if you're walking down the street, see a car you like, you photograph the license plate and the app will ID the make and model of the car from that.
1) Why not walk to the back of the car and look at the badges. If the car it already for sale the documents will be available to view too.
2) How does this app have access to that information. Are the DVLA selling peoples data again? Why should this app have access to information about my license plate and car?

You can get an HPI check on any car for a price
http://www.hpicheck.com/

I assume as there is no mention of price an HPI check may be an in app purchase or you get a freebie for a paid app

TBH it's not an entirely new thing. Whenever I see a vehicle that I've not encountered before, or I'm interested in the engine size etc I then go to moneysupermarket.com, scroll down to the relevant box on the car insurance section, type in the registration and it comes up with thr car make, model and spec. Besides, not all cars have badges on the back telling you the model/engine size/trim etc. You might see, say, a nice Merc with a lovely interior. It may be debadged. Something like this will help you find similar vehicles for sale.

Sounds like a WIN app!

I tried the app on my car. It couldn’t find any in the area for sale (hardly surprising, really).

It did get the specs right though.

Sounds like a fairly basic DVLA vehicle enquiry that you can do online for free. o.O

^- My car according to the DVLA. No personal information on there.

Suspect my car has done a fair few more miles than your house. ;-)
