Good people of the forum, I have a slight quandary.
I'm hoping to change the car I'm presently driving in the middle of the week, so I'm ringing round to get some quotes on the insurance. The two contenders at the moment are... £429.99, £50 excess, 6000 miles p/a, fully comp, protected no claims. £337, £500 excess, 5000 miles p/a, fully comp, protected no claims.
I reckon paying the additional £90 for the first quote to save £450 on the excess is worth it, with the higher mileage. What do you reckon? I'd hate to get into an accident and be forking out that much more for the sake of £90 up front now.

A question: Is there a particular reason why the insurance quotes are so high? You're not a novice driver, that's for sure. When it comes around for me in the summer, I shall be looking at a big name that's been claiming up to 90% NCD for experienced drivers. It might be worth a look. *cough* Axa*cough*

Go with the cheaper quote and dont crash. Or get your car nicked. Simplez. Obviously dont do that. I agree its better to pay a little more and get the excess down just in case the worst did happen.

Yes - I’ll be looking at theirs too when it’s up for renewal. I did save a bundle with Swift Cover last year.

Ooooh a third way hoves into view. £255, £100 excess, 6000 miles p/a, fully comp, protected, legal bells and whistles. With an agreed value on the car too, and unlimited glass cover (subject to a £60 excess).
I suspect we now have a winner.

The third quote is surely the best.
Don't worry about the milage though - do they insurance company ask you for the milage of the car? No! They have no possible way of knowing how many miles you are going to be doing in the car.

I couldn't disagree more, my insurance company asked for an (estimated) mileage on the car before I got my quote. They will regsiter the mileage that you do in a year to determine whether things are "regular wear and tear" I have my car insured over 40,000 miles for the year, if I didn't and I claimed for an accident or something, the fact that I didn't declare my estimated mileage accurately is enough to invalidate my car insurance. Edited to add: And it adds to the risk assessment, if you are doing more miles (and therefore spending more time on the road) then you are more likely to have an accident, even one that's not your fault.

Really?? I've had quotes from something like a dozen companies, and none of them asked for my milage. Even if they did, they wouldn't have any proof of how my miles were travelled on a policy. My car has two policies - one for domestic and social, and one for commercial. They have precisely zero idea of how many miles I've done on either policy, even if they did ask for my mileage.

Exactly, that's why I don't do many miles.

Interesting. Who with, out of interest? Also, do we get a pic of this beast? Oh and Nick. I'm afraid your wrong. The more miles you do, the more of a liability you represent to an underwriter. Hence the question. I you do more miles than you agreed to on the policy, then can refuse a claim.

I just did a check with *cough*Axa*cough* and amazingly the quote drops by about fifty squids if I include Best Beloved as a named driver.
Might be worth adding a family member as a named driver into your quote mix, if you don't already do that.

And my point is that they don't ask you! They ask how many miles you will do, but not how many miles the car has done. Zippy's insurer asked her, but she's the only person I've heard mention that their insurance company asked for the mileage. Mine certainly didn't, and as I mentioned, even if they did then they still wouldn't be able to prove anything.
