3D TV arrives in Australia next week, but soccer fans thinking about watching the game with a beer might want to check the fine print.

Samsung yesterday revealed the first range of 3D TVs to go on sale in Australia next week, beating rivals Sony and Panasonic to the shelves.

One of the first events to make use of the technology will be the World Cup, with FIFA announcing 25 matches to be filmed in 3D — including Australia's game against Germany on June 13.

But if you're planning on watching it with a beer, think again.

Viewers under the influence of alcohol are among the list of people warned not to watch 3D TV by Samsung's safety guidelines.

Others include pregnant women, the elderly, those who suffer from epilepsy and those who are sleep deprived.

And despite Samsung showing off its new 3D technology with a screening of kids' film Monsters vs Aliens at a press conference in Sydney, children under the age of six are ruled out as well.

The safety guidelines also warn people to be careful where they place their 3D TV in the house because of possible disorientation.

"DO NOT place your TV near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that can be tripped over, run into, knocked down, broken or fallen over," Samsung says.

Despite the safety restrictions, Samsung expects the TVs to be a hit with "a lot" of stock shipped into the country to meet demand.

The TVs themselves begin at about $2500 and come with two sets of special battery-powered glasses to view 3D. Extra sets of glasses start at about $100.

Sony and Panasonic are also expected to launch 3D TVs later in the year.

They know full well that drunks and kids, and possibly drunk kids will watch TV. It is just a disclaimer like McDs saying coffee may be hot.

when they come up with sets that do not require you to wear silly glasses then I can see it potentially getting popular some sport would be good in 3D as would some other things ;)

It's new technology...I wonder whether there were warnings when the TV was first invented and put into homes...

I seem to recall reading somewhere that when cars were invented, they should only travel at something like 2mph, as it was thought that travelling at faster speeds could damage your health (or something)

And cars - 4mph and a bloke with a red flag walking ahead to warn people. I can think of a few people I know who need that enforcing again, although just in their cases :)
