What's your experience of IMAX cinema screenings?

Post subject:  What's your experience of IMAX cinema screenings?
I've never been to an IMAX screening, so I'm curious to hear what people make of it... Is it worth the extra cost? Did you find it a bit overwhelming? etc.

My renewed interest comes from this:

I saw something about a black mare in Munich at IMAX a couple of years ago. The screen was huge, but not any better/worse than any other digital cinema... :?

I saw Harry Potter in 3D at the Imax cinema in Sydney.

I thought it was good but not miles better than a normal cinema... until the 3D effects started.

The thing with the Imax is that almost all your peripheral vision is covered by the screen so they can make things jump out at you and appear to be very close in front of you.

I felt like I could reach out and hold the orb prophecy at one point.

I saw the X Games at the Imax in London, and it was amazing. Really enjoyed it. Good experience - given the right film it's a treat.

I'd agree with this. I've seen a couple of short 3D films plus Avatar and I thought the clarity was superior to 'normal' cinema screenings. It can be expensive, but for the occasional treat it's worth it.

I saw the titanic documentary at the IMAX in Sydney. It was really cool. Better than 3D in the cinema, I think.

I've seen Transformers and James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss in IMAX in the US. Both jaw dropping in their own ways. It's absolutely worth it. I just can't afford the trip to London whenever there's something I want to watch.

I thought the Odyssey still had a screen, I may be wrong, I'll look it up later :)

Yeah, but they do have movies every now and then. it's worth keeping an eye on screenings

I saw the first Transformers movie at the iMax in Bradford when it came out. It was amazing and I would thoroughly recommend it :D
