I usually go for long stretches of time without drinking, it's not that difficult (even as a student)

With exception of Monday (gf's dissertation handed in so out for drinks with friends) the last time I drank was over a month before that.

Mind it's probably because I drive so much that I don't let myself drink much if at all

The 1st day is an absolute barsteward - there's an ache that summat's missing all the time, the 2nd day is easier but still a bummer, but the 3rd day is a breeze (comparatively).

All I can offer is that the longer you last the easier it gets. You'll feel so much more awake and alive you'll wonder why you didn't try it before - but beware, that 1st sip when you allow yourself is seriously evil, 'tis never enough and so so tempting to overindulge as a reward...

Hang in there mate - you'll wonder why you never tried it before...

Good luck and be strong.

I don't find Alcohol to be hard to give up and generally can go for weeks during term time if i'm busy with work or just too lazy to buy it.

Meat on the other hand... I've given that up for Lent 4 years in a row now and it never gets any easier :(.

Two weeks? Piece of cake. I probably drink a beer every 3 or 4 weeks. ;)

My longest period without a drink was about 18 months. I didn't give up drinking, I just couldn't be bothered with anything alcoholic.

18 years? but if you are only 18 then that is only because you have not broken the law.

I went for 7 years without a drink. I can drink when I want but do not bother not because of the expense but because I am not that fussed. I used to cycle everywhere and would never drink and cycle. So that effectively put alcohol on the back seat because I had a one clear alcohol free day before driving or cycling. So have never failed a breath test. Even now I can go for weeks without a drink.

The upside is that when you want to drink and get drunk it is very easy and very cheap.

I think it's partly the social aspect of drinking that is the hardest part, like smokers who only smoke when they're out socially with other smokers, you get in the habit of a glass of wine with dinner or a pint with your mates on a Sunday. I think substitution is the key, swap wine at dinner with a really nice fruit juice, perhaps mixed with sparkling water or lemonade, drink a pint of coke at the pub instead of beer, it means you're holding the same sized glass as you're used to.

Get a bit imaginative with the exercise and try not to see it as deprivation, view it as a social or personal experiment and pay attention to how it makes you feel, learn to listen to your body and see what effects you notice (once the DT's have worn off anyway) :D I hope it goes well for you.

I tend to drink only 1 or 2 pints a week at our Friday night counselling session, and I could give it up without any problem, however last weekend I went overboard during a girls night out and was horribly ill. It was recent enough that I am keen not to overdo it this weekend at JJs but it is Beltane after all, one of the bigger events on the Pagan calendar so that may all go out of the window, especially if the weather is good enough for fire!!

Anywho, good luck, keep us posted with how it goes (perhaps in your FPotD posts??) you'll very likely feel better for it in the long run and it might be worth doing a proper detox for a good month or so while you've already quit and got over the difficult first few days. 8-)

Yes being a social drinker is a great way of restricting your drinking. It helps if you are then antisocial. :D

May I suggest that next time you have a drink it's on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, preferably with a pound of sausages tied to your arms and legs?

For what it's worth I don't remember the last time I had a drink but two weeks...? Yeah, you can do it! :D
