Does anyone know of a GPS package for the iphone suitable for pedestrians?
I'm looking for something that includes public footpaths etc..

I have a tomtom for the car so I don't need an expensive all singing, all dancing affair.

Cheers

I thought maps already did that?

Not sure about public footpaths though. Have you tried google maps?

'Mytracks' is quite decent and free, or I quite like 'Trails' which IIRC costs a couple of quid. Be aware it absolutely eats the battery though.

I saw Mytracks on the app store, but I thought it was just for recording your own routes etc..

No, maps does have a walk feature, but it still just sends you round the road routes.

Maps is based on google maps.

Really?

Google map's "walk" feature has been in beta roflma for ever, but it does not use purely road routes. It certainly lets you go down alleys and the wrong way up one way streets.

I'm not sure if it knows every foot path, but it certainly does not send you the "road route". I use it in London mostly, where I've never needed a green path.

That was what I used it for - I think you can plan routes in combination with the mytracks desktop app. Haven't tried that though. I don't know what there is for Windows but for the Mac there's a brilliant free app called TrailRunner that will allow you to do all the route planning stuff then export it to a GPX file which you might be able to import into some of the iPhone apps.

TBH I was mostly using them for geotagging, so I wasn't using them following a pre-defined route, just wherever I felt like going :).
