Now that I've a nephew, I'm forever telling his fcukwit of a mother to turn the TV off and speak more to the child... I'm obviously not calling this article definitive, but it's brought the issue back to mind again:

I'm just wondering what other peoples' take on it is... Put it this way, the amount of people I know who can mindlessly watch reality sh1te for hours on end would suggest kids are maybe being left mentally stunted. Slightly

Quote:
One nation
under God
has turned into
one nation under the influence
of one drug

Television, the drug of the Nation
Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

T.V., it satellite links
our United States of Unconsciousness
Apathetic therapeutic and extremely addictive
The methadone metronome pumping out
150 channels 24 hours a day
you can flip through all of them
and still there's nothing worth watching
T.V. is the reason why less than 10 per cent of our
Nation reads books daily
Why most people think Central Amerika
means Kansas
Socialism means unamerican
and Apartheid is a new headache remedy
absorbed in it's world it's so hard to find us
It shapes our mind the most
maybe the mother of our Nation
should remind us
that we're sitting too close...

Ours are spending too much time on their computers, watching YouTube!

Already put a time limit on the youngest's connection!

Those of you who haven't seen "Network" (1976), need to. ASAP.

It's easily done. Thomas the Tank Engine settles my son down when he's upset.
Having said that he's not a telly addict. He prefers being read to or being in the garden.

I used to love staying at home with our youngest and watching CBeebies for hours on end, (when she was still pre-school age). The thing is that we also used to talk and play games and generally interact, not just sit there like zombies. As long as kids aren't just being left alone in front of the telly I don't think there's a problem.

Whenever my I go round to my sister-in-law's house, the telly is always on, even if nobody's watching it. When my neice comes to visit, she always says, "can I have the telly on?" I always say "yes, if you're going to watch it". She watches it for about five seconds, then gets distracted, so I switch it off.

My sister loves the Disney games on the disney website. And watches a fair amount of dora the explorer.
We don't have a tv where we eat meals tho, and nobody ever eats in front of the TV.

The problem is many treat the telly as a simple child minder. :(

No TVs in the bedrooms either, just in the lounge and in the party room - currently only DVDs, we need to run a second cable from the satellite dish down to the cellar...

We all have TVs in our bedrooms. Two of ours are teenagers and don't necessarily want to watch the stuff that we watch, and we certainly don't want to watch the stuff they like! Youngest occasionally goes upstairs to watch a DVD but that's usually in our room.

We have a TV in our bedroom as there is nothing like watching Match of the day in the comfort of your own bed!

Well they obviously watch more than I did but then it wasn't on 24 hours a day and for quite a while there were only three channels.

Funnily enough in Finland there are only a few state channels and they're not on all day. A coincidence that their kids don't start school till the age of 7, receive less hours teaching and yet are one of the highest performing nations in Europe?

In Sweden they do not start school till 7 and again do very well. Our kids start at 4 and are still way behind at ten.
