Well, I've deleted my Facebook account. I hardly used it anyway, but their constant erosion of privacy and their policy of opting in to all new privacy reductions was just too much. I joined to keep in touch with family and friends, not to tell the whole world about what I was doing - that is what Twitter is for!

With Twitter, I know the score, I know that the messages are designed for everybody.

With Facebook, it was supposed to be about closed groups of friends, but with their current privacy settings, it is a group of friends, which includes all Facebook users, Facebook affiliates and just about any other website that wants my information. That isn't what I signed up for!

So I deleted all updates, set all privacy settings to "only me" and deleted the account - there is a 14 day cooling-off period.

I was thinking of doing the same yesterday. I think I'll wait until after I finish uni, though, as they use it quite a bit, despite better tools being available for their uses.

Why call it suicice when freedom, release or shedding would be more apt?

It seems to be offerring me less and less, except for a lazy way to keep in touch with people and inbox spam.

I went through every page and setting last weekend turning everything to "only me" or "only friends" on my photos, then I went through and culled my f/list to only the people I know. I cut all my "pages" down to the barest minimum and unfriended all the "groups" I don't want to belong to. I think that'll do for me especially since I also removed myself from the search tool, so you can search all day for me using my name and get nothing :D

All my photographs are open to everyone. Fb uses such harsh compression that if anyone wanted to steal them there's very little that could be done with them.

Ummm, nope. I've quit Facebook five times in the past 12 months. I know it's bad for me and a waste of my life, but I find it's become habitual and I check it all day everyday in the hope that something will have changed.

They don't delete your account, just freeze it. All you have to do is log back in with your old details and it comes right back. Bastards. The longest I went without Facebook was 4 months, not 14 days, and it was all still there when I caved in.

You can disable the account, any time you come back it is re-activated.

If you actually select to DELETE the account, as opposed to disable it, you are given 14 days to change your mind (log back in).
