Americans are lousy at geography especially if it outside their borders. With the exception of the military, academic and diplomats they generally are really clueless. There was an American Footballer (NFL) who came to play a game at Wembley and wanted to know if he needed to hire a translator or get a phrase book. And many had no idea where Iraq was before the war. That said many Brits are almost as bad.

Yeah, primarily down to the insular nature of their educational system. its not that the people lack the intelligence its that the lack the teaching or necessity. In the UK if we want a warm holiday we hop on a plain to Greece, Egypt or Spain. In America they go to Florida or California, perhaps Hawaii or the Caribbean. Skiing we go to the France, Italy, Switzerland etc they go to California or perhaps Canada.

Ignoring those that wish to learn about other culture and societies those that just want to leave a happy and active social/family life have no need to leave America.

Yes we do have that advantage, but many Americans simply do not want to know about the world outside their borders. There are those sort everywhere even here.

I know a lot of people who have never ever been out of France and can still locate most countries on the map. That's because geography is compulsory until ALevels there. In the US it's a real pick and choose and some people have never done any geography or biology at all. And then you end up with awkward situation like 25 yo guys who don't know how babies are made.

If it was from any country other than America there would be a strong possibility that it was deliberate, somebody having a bad day or a joke. I suppose that still is possible, but unlikely.

Did anyone tell the Americans that the world cup would be played where there are dragons and people eat each other? :D
