 | | | | Quote: Spotify unveils new £4.99 per month tariff
Free version restricted to 20 hours per month
Carrie-Ann Skinner
Spotify has launched a new £4.99-per-month tariff for web users who want to stream music online.
Previously, the Swedish service offered two options: users could either stream music for free using an advertising-supported service or pay £10-per-month for ad-free listening.
However, from today the free version of Spotify, which has been dubbed 'Open', is being restricted to 20 hours of music streaming per month.
To access unlimited streaming, web users will have to purchase the 'Unlimited' package, which costs £4.99-per-month but is also advert-free.
The 'Open' option also allows users to skip the 'invite system' that meant web users could only join the music-streaming service if asked by an existing member.
Spotify first removed the invite-only restriction in February 2009. However, it reinstated the requirement in September, due to the "huge demand" caused by the launch of an app for Apple iPhones and handsets running the Google Android platform.
The £10 per month 'Premium' subscription remains and ensures users can access playlists from the service offline and via their mobile phone.
"We're really excited to offer more choices for users and existing users who are happy with their current plan won't be affected by these updates," said Spotify's Andres Sehr, in a blog.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.c ... d=3223773&They were always gonna have to do something, but pissing off your users who were tolerating increasing ads in the hope they'll give you a fiver every month just isn't gonna work From their site: http://www.spotify.com/uk/get-spotify/open/Now I wonder if that's effectively multiple sets of 20 hours they're talking about there? I can't see it somehow... Either way, I'm wondering if they'll catch on to multiple log-ins, from the same IP address or something? I guess I'll try it if it comes to it - I suspect I could hit 20 hours within 4 weeks quite quickly No matter what, there's always Grooveshark and various other 'suppliers' (I don't mean piracy, but you do what you like)

well, i expect spotify to loose alot of people soon, 20 hours can be done in a couple of days easily. but £5 a month does seem better than the £10 a month one

"20 hours of their music"
Does that mean you can listen to 20 hours of your friends music, and as much of your own?
Or is that 20 hours of music in total?
Little confusing that.
And very annoying. I put up with the ads and the lack of music (compared with grooveshark) because of the ease of finding stuff. It's a good service, but making me pay for it? Nuh uh, not unless I OWN that music will I pay for it!

On the other hand, I probably listen to 2 or 3 minutes of music a month, on average, so I've never bothered setting up an account.

I still have 5 hours of podcasts from yesterday to listen to so do not have the time for Spotify, then I have 1300 CD's that I have ripped to listen to so that afterwards. It might have all proved to be a fad by the time I get around to joining Spotify.

Given the infinitesimal amount of money artists get from Spotify, I can't help but feel that anything that puts them off is a good thing.

Yes and why buying a CD is better for the artist even if you do rip it. Artists get a better deal off physical media, than from any other source, possibly excluding live events

Indeed, but some people are put off by spending £15 on a cd if there's one good song in it. I use spotify to discover bands and songs, and if i like them, go buy them afterwards. I'd never be able to afford the 500+h of music i listen a month otherwise
Also to listen to albums that you are to ashamed to own.

But every little helps & it all adds up. If you're getting a million plays a day it'd add up to a fair amount of money in a year. Wouldn't you rather they get a little money than nothing from everyone stealing it?

Sadly not... the chart Here shows how many plays of certain media the artist would need to maintain a US minimum wage, quite eye opening really...

But the record companies sign artists onto spotify, don't they? Surely the rate is decided by common accord?

But that only applies if everyone stopped buying CD's etc & just used spotify. As most spotify users I know either use it for listening to new bands before they buy stuff or as an alternative to p2p piracy, the artist is better off. The chart is also missing publishing off it as well (which pays better that record sales). Although if labels stopped ripping artists off everything would be OK (look at how much more the label takes compared to the artist for a spotify play, all they had to do was provide a wav file to spotify to store)
