Platinum Dunes Steers 'Turtles' Relaunch
By MIKE FLEMING

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have brought Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the live-action film that reboots the film series launched by New Line in 1990. Bay, Fuller and Form will produce with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick.

The producers will begin meetings with writers in the next few weeks. The deal puts Bay in the center of two Paramount franchises, as he started production May 17 on Transformers 3, and is zeroing in on Rosie Huntington-Whitely to replace Megan Fox as love interest for Shia LaBeouf. TMNT, a co-production between Paramount and Nickelodeon, is an outgrowth of the $60 million acquisition made by Nick last October for global rights to the entire Turtles franchise. Right around the same time, Paramount made a first look deal with the Platinum Dunes partners, who will generate genre projects but also want to expand their scope. While they've already set up several projects including a Rob Cohen-remake of Fright Night, the Turtles film puts them into new territory.

I used to buy the original TMNT comics, until they released them as kiddies comics and cartoons, not to mention those god-awful movies.

I wish they would stop destroying good comic characters.

I still haven't watched Ghostrider, and never will, because I know it will be crap.

I didn't mind the films, I still watch them when they're on (they were really pushing their luck with the third though), and I was young enough to like the cartoon and comics that followed it :)

Ghostrider is a steaming pile of crap - when Sam Elliott can't even bring any charm to a movie, you know you're in the sh1t :(

i remember watching the films when I was a kid, though can't recall anything about them. The 80s cartoons at the time were good but in retrospect (and watching them a few years ago on BBC2) they were crap. The newer 2002 series was far superior. Given a slightly more darker edge, could be awesome.

Never read the comics but had a few books and annuals.

If you prefer dark and edgy, the original comics would be to your liking.

+1, and there's trade paperback collections on Amazon and eBay. I remember one where Splinter actually sent the Turtles out to assassinate Shredder

Though they quickly got into that alternate world b0llocks that ruins most comics for me - it then turned up in the 2002 series which I loved until that point :(

I actually preferred the original cartoon series in that respect, where the Utroms were kinda condensed into one character (Krang), and the Triceratons were Krang's goons. And let's not forget two all-time classic characters:

:D

Just remembered, there's a figurine series in the original style, though the green set at least is hard to get for a sensible price now (I really want the green set :( ):
