Post subject:  New ISP?

I know this should probably go in networking, feel free to move it. Just wanted a larger range of opinions :)

I'm looking into ISPs for next month as Faye and I are getting a new flat. We currently get the Internet through our landlady and she contracts a local company who sorts out a connection with BT...

I'm mainly looking for good speeds (here in aber out exchange is old and overcrowded, so the best I can hope for is 6mb), large/unlimited downloads, not too fussed about traffic shaping, and a phone line with some sort of free calls to landlines (weekends would be great, anything else is a bonus).

I've been looking at Talk Talk and their price seems really good: http://broadband.talktalk.co.uk/product ... essentials
I've been screwed around by BT too much this last year, as have others who I know, they don't appear to care about their customers.

Does anyone have any recommendations/warnings about various ISPs? If so, I'd love to hear about them :)

Ben

Zen - no contest

Migrated to them 2 years ago from another ISP and not looked back.

From 1st June they are giving users 100Gb useage a month (you can buy more if needed!), they do not traffic shape and later in June I should get ADSL2 so "up to 24mb/s"

I have the feeling that O2 were sold off by BT some years ago so are not part of BT at all now.

Aye but you need a BT line.

+1 for o2, been great for me especially with a £10 discount if you have a monthly mobile contract with them.

+1, but all you need now is an O2 number; I gave them my sister's (I'm T-mobile) and she got a £50 top-up through Quidco :D , though that offer's ended now...

I assume it has to be a number that is not already registered to an account, though.

If you're exchange isn't unbundled, don't use Sky as they're connect service is slooooooooow – looking at about 0.5meg or less at peak times.

Thanks all :)

I think that O2 looks really good, I'll be phoning them up in the near future to see what they can do for me :)

O2/BE are great if they have LLU in your exchange. DO NOT TOUCH their access product, really it is terrible , at times slower than dial up, pages simply timed out.

Are there any recommendations for non llu exchanges, or will I have to go to BT? I will do just about anything to avoid that company, but my internet access is so slow at the moment, it's ridiculous.

Are you in a cabled area? We switched to Virgin earlier this year, after BT kept futzing up the phone lines with their increasing speeds, and it's been pretty solid.

Unfortunately we are not...Virgin won't touch Aberystwyth, probably due to the fact that we are ~70 miles from the nearest large town (Carmarthen which sits at the end of the M4) and ~120 miles from Birmingham...
