Post subject:  Lost Password
I am trying to connect to a mates wifi network. He is on Vista. He can't remember the WiFi password. His computer was set up by a mate. Will the password be stored anywhere where he can find it in the Vista control panels or elsewhere?

Never had to do it, but found this:

Also, if you want to change your password, just type in your default gateway into your browser. To find this, go to the control pannel on your PC, and open "network connections"

Then double click on your Local Area Connection (if your PC is connected to the router with a cable) or Wireless connection (if its conencted via WiFi.)

Then Click on the support tab, and look for "default gateway" then type in that number (including the dots) into your browser. This will open your router's settings.

Nope, Windows encrypts the information and I doubt you can get it in any intelligible form. There's nothing like the Mac keyring built into Windows, so if all else fails you'll need to reset the router or find the password elsewhere.

Or click on the wifi icon in the systray, right click the connection you want, select show characters.

Edit - Perhaps that doesn't work in Vista. :lol:

99% of wireless passwords are stored as plaintext as long as you can access the routers control panel (see first response).

If you use an ethernet cable then you don't normally need the wireless password at all, although the router may have it's own password for the control panel, but it's often left blank.

We have been playing 20 guesses and have now got the right password. He is now writing it down on a piece of paper.

I have copies all around the house, including one taped to the inside of a kitchen cabinet :lol:

I have his password now automatically stored on my Mac (on the keychain). Also it is now synced to all my other Macs via Mobile Me.

His bit of paper should serve him well though.

I tend to stick post-its to the underneath of all the routers I set up. If someone can get that close they could plug a cable in and get at your interwebs that way.

My passwords live in my head, apart from two which live on a post it on my monitor, as they're 12 character random strings. I can never quite the second one, but the first one's ok if I'm at a proper keyboard. From my phone? Forget it.

The alternative was going to be something such as Cain&Abel, but that's a lot of work if you don't have rainbow tables, and/or your wireless password is half decent. :-/

I wonder if Linux supports a similar thing to Macs MobileMe thingymabob? Sounds like one of the few novelties they've come out with that actually sounds really useful. :-)
