I'm the proud owner of a bar of silver :) 1) because i liked the sound of owning some silver and 2) it'll be interesting to see if it's worth more in a few months. Does anyone have expereince with trading precious metal and does anyone have any suggestions for getting a good price/checking the price of silver when it comes to selling it? Cheers :)

I'm not giving my profit to eBay and Royal Mail, that'd defeat the point, I want to sell direct. :)

Yeah it's yours to engrave as you want. They come in collector's designs and everything, those sort of things are very popular in america, it's also interesting to note that the value of the bar will change depending on the reputation of the mint that made the bar. I'll post a pic in a bit when i have my camera hooked up ;)

I once looked in to the cost of gold bars for an advert we were doing. We needed props.
Anyway - suffice to say I'd never sleep if I owned a bar of gold. It's like being Steve Jobs or Steve Ballmer (but not really) and checking the share price every hour - the fluctuations would kill me.

Problem with owning physical silver and gold is that bid-offer spreads are massive. There are gold sellers who buy and sell precious metals, just google them out. Next time, if you want to have some exposure to precious metals try ETFs (exchange traded funds) instead, they much more convenient, more liquid and transaction costs are lower.

Owning physical silver or gold only make sense when you expect total collapse of civilised world. And in that case owning a rifle with plenty of ammo is more important than gold or silver
