Just to let you know that my iPhone update to iOS 4 has failed in a totally spectacular fashion. iTunes did a backup that lasted an hour, updated the phone, and then reported an error -34 when restoring.

It also reports a file not found error when syncing. I’ve tried various restores, but without any luck. The worst bit is that the backup taken by iTunes yesterday does not appear in the restore list. This makes me think that a lot of in app data has been lost.

This is typical of my experience:

This is a warning - if you have an iPHone 3G, it may be worth holding off updating it with iOS 4 for now. These problems are common and I am not alone.

It's no help to you but this is certainly not an isolated incident.
I'm holding off on the iOS4 upgrade. I'll be getting my iPhone4 later this week (all being well) and I'll just backup and sync my 3G before connecting the iP4, then I'll take it from there.

Blimey this is shoddy!

This seems to be happening a lot - come on Apple, sort it out!

Did you remember to unlock the SIM before updating? I read that was a common problem when iPhone OS 3 came out.

Restore from recovery mode?

Tried restore - but from when? 5th Feb 2010 or one of today’s backups? I want to know where yesterday’s pre iOS4 back up went, iTunes doesn’t seem to know.

I get an error -34 when restoring each time.

Check the backups folder to see if the file exists on the HDD

A guy at work had some issues with his 3GS. The backup process hanging and whatnot. He was up until 2am trying to fix it.

Nice warning Paul, I'll stop the GF plugging in hers until it's sorted, I'll be [LIFTED] if I’m spending a evening trying to sort that mess out.

The backup process does take a very long time and it does appear to hang. I guess it is a case of trusting that it hasn't. Annoyingly it has to re-optimise your photo's before it puts them back on the phone, which takes ages if you have a lot of photo's!

From what I have read about this update, it is not worth installing on the 3G given the lack of multi tasking, wallpapers and bluetooth keyboard support.

How it is on iPhone 3G

There's no multitasking in iOS 4 for the iPhone 3G. (Or wallpapers or Bluetooth keyboard support.) Which would be fine, if iOS 4 delivered that other thing iPhone 3G owners really wanted: speed. It's no faster than OS 3.1. The hangups, the stuttering and the chugging, still make the iPhone 3G kind of infuriating to use, or at least make you really want to buy a new iPhone.

But iOS 4 still makes it a better experience overall: The unified inbox and folders alone make it worth the jump. After all, it's not any worse than 3.1.

Folders are useful.

My 3GS upgraded whilst I was in the shower this morning... The only problem was the extra half hour wait, while it recreated the photo gallery! Why???? That made me 30 minutes late leaving for work, but I usually turn up 40 minutes early, so I still had time to pop over to the bakers and get a sultana roll.

Well, I had to start the phone from scratch - so it’s “as new”. This means essentially wiping the phone and reinstalling everything - and that took hours (partly because iTunes down samples music to 128kbs). It also means that all the app data is lost - so the FaceBook app needed me to reenter my log in and password. Game save data is gone. More annoyingly, my peak flow chart has gone. I started using an app on the iPhone to record my peak flow (it’s an asthma thing) and had 6 months of data. All gone. If the pre iOS 4 backup had been available, all that data would still be available.

I am annoyed about this, but it’s not like anyone has died, but still.

Apple cocked this one up big time.

Same for me except that it seems to have duplicated all of the pictures on the phone - not sure if there is a quick way I can get rid of them and don't want to deleat them 1 by 1
