Having read the synopsis on Wikipedia and seen the trailer, this seems to be a pretty gruesome idea brought to life.

I've seen some stills from this, and suffice it to say, I doubt I'll be tracking this one down to watch.
I sat through the Saw films, Hostel 1 and 2 and I've had enough for the moment.

I gave up after Saw 1 and just what I read about Hostel was enough - Arnie films have more substance and are more 'honest'

I gave up on the Saw films after the first one too. I thought it was a poor film with a ridiculous and downright silly ending and after that I think that the films have just descended into torture-fests but I must emphasise that I haven't seen any of them. There must be something to it though as they keep getting made. Hostel may well be a better-made film that you'd have thought and probably less gory. Yes it has a certain reputation as 'torture porn' but where it succeeds is in creating an atmosphere of real dread, especially as the opening of the film shows a man cleaning a blood-spattered room where something deeply unpleasant has occurred. You're more likely to be put off by the acting and the unlikeable main characters than by the violence.

Hostel does show people suffering in a painful manner but I think in some ways this is more honest than an Arnie film where people are massacred by the truckload and yet it is treated as a joke and a cue for a snappy one-liner. I'm not trying to justify films like Hostel and Saw because at times while watching them you do wonder what kind of society is producing this sort of thing as entertainment as in "Why am I watching this?" I would also say that nothing in the Hostel film matches the scene in Reservoir Dogs with Mr Blonde and the policeman for sheer horror, yet there you don't really see anything; it is just conveyed in good acting and direction.

Which is a typical Hitchcock device - the best horror is when the mind is left to fill the gaps. The shower scene in Psycho has far less in it than people claim to remember.

I’ve not seen Hostel or any of the Saw films. I have been trying to think of the right word to describe my feelings about that kind of film. The word “sordid” came to mind, but it’s a few beats off what I really want to convey. There is something horrible “domestic” about them. From what I have read about Saw, and the Wiki article on the Human Centipede, they are far more within the realms of possibility than a zombie film would be. I guess that’s the thing about them - the fantastical elements have been removed.

We know all too well that there are proper lunatics in the real world with very disturbing things going on in their cellars, and these goings on are not done in some over stated gothic dungeon. They are done in a very DIY kind of way in locations we recognise and the cellars will have been modified with bits from B&Q, lashed together with gaffa tape and dexion. These films appear to be connecting with this aesthetic. It’s almost as if the horror is not what is being done (horror films have always been about mutilation, torture, murder, etc.) but where it is being done.

Human Centipede almost appears to be a reworking of Frankenstein. Imagine that story set in a council estate in a town near you - it could be far, far more visually grotesque in this kind of aesthetic setting/

Exactly why the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre was so effective. Anyone who's seen it will tell you that it's not the violence in the film that's memorable (because there is very little) but its the sheer low-life sleaziness of the family's home....it reflects the mental degradation of the family members. Hostel does a similar thing.



And I feel that this is why Halloween (the 1979 original) is in many ways the scariest film I've seen. Virtually no blood, a great soundtrack and John Carpenter's careful direction make it a tense movie while showing very little. In fact the spookiest moments are when The Shape is glimpsed in the background only to vanish a second later.

I note the mad scientist is German (or at least sounds like it to me).

According to his plans I think he would only need 25 people in total, with arms becoming legs. And yes I believe he was German.

I guess I mean that there's no pretensions (whether with the audience, director, or over-hyped review) about Arnie's or anyone else's action films, whereas the spate of cheap, crap horror/torture porn films are always paraded as 'getting under your skin', 'the most gruesome film ever/in the never-ending series' etc. I really get annoyed when 'psychological' crops up, when all these films are about is gore.

Oh, and even Arnie films generally have a plot that means you aren't forgetting it as you're watching it

In fact I can sum up the majority of recent horror films with a Joker line: 'You've got NOTHING!'

A second film is planned, with I think a 12 person construct, and a lot more nasty experiments.
