I have retractable USB cables to charge my iPods and soon iPhone so do not need a charger. I just plug into a USB port somewhere.

If Apple don't play ball with a microUSB connection for universal chargers soon I can see the European Commission getting rather upset, and we all know what happens when big companies upset the European Commission...

Apple signed an agreement with other phone manufacturers to phase out proprietary connections in favour of an industry standard (micro usb) to reduce the waste produced from chargers that were not cross compatible.

This agreement came in this year. The iPhone 4 SHOULD have one. It doesn't.

The point isn't that an existing Apple user has the kit already, it's that if you get a new NON APPLE phone after you don't have to fart about with a new charger as the existing one will work.

Proprietary connections kill competition in hardware between companies, just look at what the iDock has done to the mp3 player market with companies such as iRiver, Sandisk, Archos and Sony with the proprietary marketplace, audio format and data connection.

The MicroUSB could be added next to the port and work with either, not that it would raise the cost much...


Absolutely. I think it's going to look even worse on them with their continued 'stretching' of the truth in the advertisements as well as the App store 'mishaps' with apps stealing personal data (they will love that one) and also with their favouritism with submissions.

I am not going top disagree. They signed up to it and should comply. It would mean that others could use my charger or I theres, or not buy one at all. I would however get a retractable microUSB-USB charger. All my devices are chargeable via USB.

As for the whole micro USB thing yeah of course they should introduce it but the iPhone 4 has probably been in development for much longer than 12 months. I'm sure any phone they design since signing the agreement will include the microUSB charging interface. And the sooner the better in my opinion - I had an old Motorola with the USB cable for charging and it was bloody fantastic, if you get caught short of power anywhere it doesn't matter - you can always find a USB cable to plug into a computer! Very handy indeed.

Is this really news? That was why I posted it on the The Meeting Place. It is just a curious fact that Apple is worth more than Microsoft and Dell combined today. That could very easily change.
