Is RTD developing a Doctor Who film?

http://scifiwire.com/2010/06/johnny-dep ... -to-st.php

Is this wise?

Dunno if the Who film is wise, but I think those two have been working together too often

Disappointed? But the daleks (and the cybermen) are the worst, most plastic 'baddies' that appear in the show, IMHO. I just wish they would get rid of them...

I'm not sure either. It is a rumour, but it's not the first time I have heard it being mentioned since the reboot.

I'd be concerned about how they treated the film franchise and the TV series - parallel? Sequential? Or treat then film Doctor as a completely different character? The Peter Cushing Doctor was not the same Doctor as in the TV series, though I concede that at the time the notion of him being a Time Lord was not in the canon.

Jack Sparrow as Dr Who............ A much better idea!

Paul McGann was great. Sly's TARDIS was plush too. Loved it. Sure, it was patchy and a little American, but no reason why it couldn't work again.

Of course, that's no guarantee it will and there's a lot more canon to consider now....

Not necessarily. I can't really remember the very end of the American Doctor Who but did he actually die/regenerate at the end of it?
There's nothing to say that they couldn't go and use a previous Doctor (McGann, Eccleston) and just claim it was prior to their regeneration.

EDIT - What I mean to say is, we don't know if we've missed out on any regenerations of The Doctor. If they did it right they could tie the film and the TV show neatly together which could give both incarnations unexpected longevity.

The only Doctor Who film I'd really love to see would be the one where they tell the story of the time war.

As for who would play the doctor... in my opinion it would have to be one of the previous doctors.

Which one depends on... when did he re-generate into the Ecclestone face?

What about if we had the eight doctor at the beginning, changing into the ninth and telling us how he ended the war?

Thinking about it, we could have Ecclestone at the beginning, but what about if he needed to "change his face" maybe to trick the time lords/daleks/whoever, which would give another actor the chance to take on the role without spoiling the continuity, then maybe changing back to Ecclestone at the end?

These are just thoughts spilling out of my head in no particular order, but might be worth considering. Or not. ;)

Hmm, I've been living in Germany too long, I read the headline as "Idiot as the Doctor?"

Granted. McGann walked away with a hollywood smile on his face and then turned up as Eccleston 10yrs later with no explanation. To see THAT TARDIS again would be gorgeous. I don't think Eccleston would return though, certainly not with RTD involvement, given his recent comments.

However, any movie needs to feel cinematic. The Cushing ones can't be judged by modern cinematic standards, but the 96 movie felt "bigger" than just an long ep. I wouldn't necessarily want to see a tie-in. If McGann could return as principal and Eccleston persuaded to show up for a regeneration scene - win IMHO.

McGann did say that he’s do a regeneration scene if it was needed, but they felt not to show one, even in flashback.

For those who fear for the longevity of Dr Who, a movie would either:
1 - be a separate entity to the TV series - much like the Cushing Doctor was, even though they used TV stories for the films
2 - be a “fork” in the road - a parallel universe Doctor.
3 - be “in canon” - assuming Matt Smith’s Doctor is the last TV appearance

I kind of think it’s hokum at the moment. RTD is in the USA, he’s doing a BIG Torchwood, and there is speculation. Would a studio want to make a Doctor Who film? You bet they would now. HOWEVER, given the last series, I know who I’d like to write the script, and that would be Mr Moffat.

Was that even worth posting? If you don't like Doctor Who why did you bother reading the thread?
