Ohh, could be useful on my trip down to Silverstone as I've just discovered my mate has an iPhone. Of course, that's just after I bought a Tom Tom at the weekend, just typical!! Oh well, the more the merrier... Thanks, CC!

Free Sat Nav App would be a better title. :)

Not got an iPhone, so can't try. Found the Google Navigation app on Android to be particularly good, however. :-)

And PC Pro agree. Their cover feature last month was a test between a Tom Tom, an iPhone app, Goole Maps on Android and and old fashioned paper map. Google maps won.

Really? Didn't read that. I really do like the Streetview shown for junctions. That is very smart.

Yeah used Google Maps on a mates iPhone when he came to visit - him driving, me navigating off the phone.
Very nice bit of software, and pretty good at keeping up with the car's progress.

Well I used Skobbler tonight and it seemed very good.

When I turned off the given route it kept asking me to do a U-turn instead of re-routing though. Although after long enough it gave up and gave me an alternative route.

At one point I was going along a main road and it asked me to turn into a U shaped side road who's other end just joined back onto the main road? I was able to report it as a bug fairly easily though.

Just had a quick look and there are no settings to disable U-turns.

I also had a quick look at Waze which is also free but is a user generated map. i.e. you log in to the software on your phone and drive and if you are in a place where a road doesn't exist it will create one and upload it to the cloud map for other people to use. It's only new in the UK so it didn't have roads going to where I wanted to go but it's a cool idea.

Also on Skobbler it had good voice alerts but the woman was a bit too verbose.

Instead of just "In 400 yards take the third exit at the roundabout"

she said, "In 400 yards take the third exit at the roundabout and bear left onto the A6120 and then immediately bear left onto the A6120."

Oh, and it doesn't integrate with Google whereas Waze does.

So I wasn't able to search for the name of where I wanted to go , I had to know the address.

http://world.waze.com/

Been using this a while

Good if you know the area or it has a lot of contributors, I think I contributed to most of the North East roads purely on the amount I use it (used it for about 6 months driving different routes to places)

The live traffic update are nice, as are the free prizes for top contributors

Apparently better in the US and other countries where they started with a full road map, but it is cross platform :)
