Post subject:  Today's top TV tunes?

Hi.

A long (long) time ago, my grandmother bought me a mono cassette tape recorder. For some time I would dangle the microphone over the speaker on the TV and record my favourite TV tunes of the day, going ballistic when any of the family made a noise- making me wait another week, perhaps, for the next opportunity to record it.

The arrival of the new A-Team movie has seen me dah-dah-dah ing the classic A-Team tune (which was one of the original recordings of course) and it made me think- now that I can record tunes direct from the TV to PC and convert them to stereo MP3s in a matter of minutes, which tunes should I record?

Although I still love my TV (and movie) theme tunes- I have some very good ones in MIDI file format- I can't really think of any of today's tunes that I would really like to record, so your suggestions would be welcome.

NOTE- I don't have any cable or satellite TV service, so, for me at least, Freeview channels only, please.

I used to do this, but as you mention the whole process relied on other members of the family being silent. Many's the time an attempted recording of U.F.O. would be interrupted. Elderly relatives were the worst and would just start talking at random moments even though they'd been told umpteen times what I was doing. I've still got a cassette somewhere which has these attempts on it with a memorable one from Quatermass, ending with me saying "Bloody hell I'm trying to tape this. Now I've got to wait til next f-ing week!"

I can't actually think of anything worth recording that's on at the moment.

Erm, none, because it would be illegal.

Possibly, but wouldn't it come under the same "fair use" policy called on when recording off-air telly for later watching?

Find them on YouTube.

Let me rephrase, so that we are not discussing anything illegal, which is against board policy of course. Which tunes would you record, if it wasn't illegal of course?

A good idea, but what's the best way to take the soundtrack from a YouTube vid? I know that the software I have will record whatever is coming out of the speakers, but in the first instance it relies on a quality video/soundtrack and second, I can't say that I was all that impressed the last time I used "What you hear", although I can't recall why not.

Hypothetically, I've heard that Audio Hijack does this very well. Mac only though.

Any Video Converter is free and has a good youtube audio extraction feature.

I would record the Danger Man theme I think.

EDIT: of course that's not one of "today's" TV theme tunes, which are nothing like as memorable as those from the 60s, 70s, 80s. Life on Mars had a good one though.

I was thinking along these lines the other day with the nostalgia thread, and especially with 80s cartoons (MOTU, Thundercats, Bravestarr etc). I can't think of a single show that has a good, original theme these days :? :(

It seems that most are of the same opinion as me- might as well not bother.

I had thought about Ashes to Ashes, but I can't think what Life on Mars is at the moment. I have them both on DVD.

There is Doctor Who, of course but perhaps not the latest series tune, so another of the disc, then.

I'll just bear it in mind and keep an ear out for something good. The next time I think- "That's good" I'll sort it out- hypothetically, of course. ;)

One tune, and not to everyone's taste, would be the New Tricks one I spose (and it sounds very similar to the Wilbury's End Of the Line to me)...

I can't be the only one thinking that nostalgia threads aren't as good as they used to be... ;) :P  :etc:

I see it was co-written with Mike Moran, who also had worked with George Harrison...
