I was on the internet the other day and I found this: [/clarkson] Channel 4 have absolutely lost it. I'll throw this out there for anyone who's bored and wants any easy shot. The latest technology! ![]()

Well not everyone will know the difference. This may not be popular among the technical crowd, Though I cant see the point. If they want to do this that is their choice. |

Microsoft are pushing it here as well, with long advert segments on some channels (around 4-5 minutes), with comedy sketches to get over their point about features and safety. |

The usual "I'm a dumb Mac user and your download doesn't work" has been sent, wonder what I'll get back. |

If that is the case maybe it is a general push to get IE8 used by more people. Which is not a bad thing. Getting people away from IE6 is a very good thing. |

I agree Amnesia. If peecee users are going to use IE then it's a good idea to use the latest version, and if Channel4 can earn a bit of cash by encouraging them (which I assume they will do) then it's win-win. |

Yep, that is the general gist of the ads. It won't appeal to the techies who already use Firefox or Chrome, but hopefully it will jolt the non-technically aware people into upgrading their machines. Moving people onto IE8 (from IE6 or earlier) is a huge benefit for all - it has less vulnerarbilities, it is under active support (IE6 doesn't even get security patches any more, it is EOL) and it makes life a lot easier for web developers, because it tends to work well-enough, that the usual plethora of bad coding techniques and hacks, to get a site to work with IE6 aren't needed, you only need to code the site once and do it cleanly. Yes, like the others, it doesn't implement all of the HTML/CSS/JavaScript standards 100%, but the overlap from Chrome, Safari, Firefox and IE8 are big enough that a majority of sites can work on all of the browsers without having to have hacks in the code. Bleeding edge sites, such as HTML 5 showcases will have problems, but the majority of sites will be fine. |
