This has been discussed in the TV thread, and I said there that I thought the first episode was excellent.

I was a bit wary of it hence given it a miss.

I downloaded the books on my iphone and read through them around 5-6 months ago. Then caught Jeremy Brett's Holmes on Freeview, which was a perfect likeness to what I had pictured from the books.

The Hollywood movie IMO massacred Brett's Holmes, as well as the books. However, I did enjoy it thoroughly and had I not been prejudiced, would probably have given it 5/5.

Now, knowing the above, is it something you would recommend or is it somethin that would disappoint?

Yes, I would recommend it. Watch it on iPlayer as soon as you can. You know it makes sense! </Random Delboy quote>

I'm a great fan of the original books and I rather enjoyed it. It isn't as good as the books (films/tv shows very rarely are) and the update to modern times is a conceit to make it more palatable to the tv audience but it turned out to be very true what I consider the actual spirit of the stories. I don't know if it will hold out that way but I'm not at all put off watching the rest of the series.

Thumbs up from me although I thought the story in the first episode was a little weak.

Much to my surprise I enjoyed it too.

I would have hated it if set in Victorian England. However this is a clever twist that was really quite well done.

Yep enjoyed it.

I only hope it lasts, as I fear the novelty may wear off.

Jeremy Brett or Basil Rathbone are Holmes for me, and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson, Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, although he was a bit of a clown, did have the correct physical presence, which most other Dr. Watsons have lacked, but Hardwicke had the character down pat.

Another vote in favour here. I shall definitely be watching the next one.
There's an interview with Moffat in this weeks Radio Times about it that's also quite interesting if you can get hold of it.
He gives, IMHO, a resonable justification for it being set in modern times as well.

I was wary of this, as I consider Mr Bretts depiction as one of THE best ever.
But I thought it was very well done. The move to modern times was handled well and it was very enjoyable. If it keeps up the standard then it will become compulsive viewing. :D
a cool 8.5/10 for me.

It's been added to my 'Just played' list as that's about the only way I can keep track of things I have to watch on iPlayer these days
