Post subject:  Karl Urban to play Dredd
As I understand it, the upcoming Dredd film will be motion capture CGI. Urban is not physically big enough to play Judge Dredd, who is a mountain of a man (though he’s feeling his age, and has just returned from a gruelling year long exile and investigation into corruption at the highest level) without some kind of digital help.

More like Judge Death, but there you go :lol:

No, I can't really see Urban as Dredd either, but then nobody comes to mind either - do we actually need an older actor for the part (which obviously wouldn't please Holywood, and maybe the audience, these days)?

No, I can't really see Urban as Dredd either, but then nobody comes to mind either - do we actually need an older actor for the part (which obviously wouldn't please Holywood, and maybe the audience, these days)?


Depends. How old is Dredd now anyway? Must be pushing atleast 60 if the current timeline is to be believed, so if the story is set now, then yes, an older actor would be needed. Eventually, Tharg the MIghty must decide how Dredd’s end game will eventually play out. Dredd will have to die in service or take the Long Walk in the not too distant future.

Haven't read any of the recent books (struggle to find time for the old ones :( ), but I expect he'll get a 'reboot' of some form in them.

I never really understood the thinking behind Judges having to take the Long Walk :?

I can think of worse people than Karl Urban, but if it is motion capture CGI then why bother with a star? Well it works for Cameron so why not.

They seem to be rebooting Johnny Alpha. There is only so much time before his death that they can fill with back story.

The Long Walk is retirement. The Judge has got too old (or possibly disgraced) to be useful, so he’s given a gun, and a copy of The Law and is sent into the badlands to bring the LAw to the lawlessness. Basically - it’s a form of mandatory suicide for someone who has become useless.

The thing is Dredd already has taken the long walk once during the 'Tale of The Dead Man/Sisters of Death' storyline. If they do it again, will they have the guts to effectively write off their most famous/popular character or will they find another reason to bring him back?

That sounds suspiciously like what happens to ex MP's who lose a seat. They are sent on the long walk to Strasbourg! :P

I am not sure what say the cadets have in the matter. It has been a long time since I read 2000AD on a regular basis, but weren't the new intake only five years old?

If they do make a movie, I hope it's a damned sight better than the Stallone one, which although wasn't all bad, was far too short; missed out many opportunities to introduce the strangeness of Mega-City life and had Dredd kissing Anderson iirc (but it's been a while since I've seen it).

Definitely room for improvement.

Certainly they are recruited as young children. IIRC the cadets in 'Necropolis' were most of the way through their training and were maybe 13.

Hershey, not Anderson. They definitely didn't have the budget for a Psi-Judge special effects :). However to be fair to them they did get some aspects of it right. The uniforms and equipment were pretty much spot on, IIRC.
