After a bit of a natter in the Do you use IM thread, we thought it could be cool to set up an IRC channel.

Who would be up for this? Would anyone use it? I'm on IRC a lot, as is Weasel, rusty uses it occasionally...

Vote, voice opinions, the usual.

Also, Saspro, are you OK with this? Would you like to set it up or would you like me to do the honours?

Yes.

But we'd have to set it up so that it doesn't detract from here.

No.

It's not that I would prefer that there wasn't one, just that I don't think it's something I'd use.

How about a weekly chat thing? Maybe a specific time eg 6pm every Sunday evening.

Means you're more likely to have more people and a more lively chat. Used to work brilliantly where I used to use it.

Weekends are the quietest times on the forums, followed by evenings. I think a Sunday evening would probably be the worst possible time.

Sounds good, I know of a few channels that do that, plus you usually get idle chit chat through the rest of the week, it's just that it's not hugely busy...

Something like midweek from 6-12 might be better? As I said, it's not like the channel goes away at other times, so there would probably be people to chat to outside of that time.

Sunday is just an example and suggestion. A weekly chat IMO isn't a bad idea.

Evenings - not everyone had access to the forums from work so didn't think day time was a good idea. Hence evenings/nights.

I voted pie as it's not for me, but still strikes me as a very good idea :)

Is it worth trialling? Set up a channel and see what happens?

Sounds like a plan to me. Also, I would say we shouldn't try to restrict it to x404 forumers, we could almost have two communities tied together with a few key users...

EDIT: In fact, it could be quite a good way to get some more users onto the forums...

I've set up a channel on Freenode. Point your IRC client to irc.freenode.org and join #x404
I'm still working out some of the kinks, and this is only a trial period. If Saspro wants me to take it down, I will, or I can transfer foundership to him.

Fingers crossed :D

If you don't have an IRC client available, go to webchat.freenode.net

I voted "no" in answer to the question "do I want". Why? Because I CBA!

However, if others want to then it's no skin off anyone's nose so I don't see any reason to stop it. Even if it's not an "official" X404 branded channel, there's absolutely nothing to stop you or anyone else using an "unofficial users of x404" channel. There's no law saying friends can't chat.

My only suggestion would be to keep the channel free from illegal material so that the x404 brand is not tainted. I don't think Sas would appreciate any association with a channel sharing warez and bootlegs, no matter how unofficial.
