Might be worth waiting until the WWDC, see if there's a refresh of the line due. It'll be in June sometime, I think.

I'll be left my job by June (with any luck) and need to minimise tax by April

In that case, I wonder if it's worth scoping out the Refurb store. Perhaps one that's been back to the factory already might be a safer bet, not to mention cheaper?

I have to buy new from distribution.

I'll get it at trade price (whoohoo 10% or so off :? ) as my plan cannot work any other way.

I'm wondering this myself as its over the next couple of months when my 'should I/shouldnt I' decision needs to be made.

By the way does anyone know if the 27" iMac supports more than 1 HDD? I figured I'd probably get the cheapest 27" model and upgrade the RAM myself using Crucial stuff but wasnt sure about the HDD.

I doubt it can support more than one internal drive as none of the other iMacs have been able to do this but you should fairly easily be able to upgrade the drive it ships with as well as the amount of RAM it has.
Here's the guide

That looks like a ball ache. Maybe I'd just add an external HDD
