Well, I thought I'd have a go at making some 3D models in blender as SIO2 is written for it.

I've been following a wiki tutorial and so far it's fricking hard!

At the moment I've got the 3D equivalent of a stick man and it's taken me about 2 hours of work to get to that point!

I'd love to see a video of someone creating a 3D model for something like Transformers or Toy Story from scratch. I'd love to see how they do it. (Although I'd imagine it involves numerous +24" monitors and tablets and pens and the like...)

TBH I don't need to know this stuff for what I'm doing on the iPhone but I'd like to know it :D

Hehe, having looked at a couple of youtube vids it seems that the ridiculously complex and detailed models you see in games are actually fairly simple. Most of the extra detail is added using displacement maps.

LOL

Genius!

Do you have to use blender?

I made a full 3d textured (including bump, transparency and specularity mapping) fish in Lightwave in 90 minutes, If I had more time and did it right I would have it boned and properly animated too

I did

but based it on a trout instead of the one in the example

I'm using Blender because the SIO2 library includes an export tool to take the model out of blender and put it into the iPhone OpenGL ES format.

TBH I think most of the time spent was learning the controls. I've never used any 3D modelling software before so I was going in completely new.

Having got this far and watched a couple of videos online I reckon it'd be quite easy to create what I need for my game.

Even my stick man is more advanced than the stuff I need. :D

Well, I made my model, I even was able to render it with a nice texture and messed around applying it as a displacement map and so on.

However, I couldn't work out how to get the SIO2 python to export it :(

Will have another play tonight and see if I can get it done.
