spurious logic

Buying an item from Apple has caused some people not to buy a different item from Apple, therefore Apple are going to go out of business. It's the kind of deep, analytical thinking that has got us the thriving world economy that we have today.

A very strange way of looking at things. Myself, I've budgeted for an iPad and a new iPhone this year, rather than a new MacBook - either way, Apple will still be getting my money.

"Rather than killing off the netbook, the Ipad is harming sales of the Ipod and Macbooks.... This Ipad downside for Apple was indicated earlier this year just after the shiny new toy went on sale. Then Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster surveyed 448 Ipad buyers and found that 99 per cent of respondents had not considered either an Ipod Touch or Iphone before making the purchase..."

Setting aside the vexed question of a 'survey' of 448 people being statistically irrelevant, how do people buying an iPad, when they hadn't considered an iPod Touch or iPhone, harm Apple's sales? And did they ask why they hadn't considered an iPhone or iPT - like maybe they already had one?

Honestly, it grieves me that people get paid for writing this stuff.

Pete

I am planning on an iPhone in July or August and a iPad maybe early next year. I have just bought two i7 powered iMacs so should be fine for a few years so does that mean I will be buying an iPad instead of a mac?. While you can do many things on an iPad you really need a computer to get the most out of it.

Oh, what a surprise, the Reg taking a very negative take on that story. Practically everywhere else is saying 'iPad eating netbook/notebook sales'.

The key piece of that report from Morgan Stanley is - “44% of iPad owners bought an iPad instead of a notebook. Almost a quarter bought it instead of a MacBook while 27% said they would now forego buying a PC and 41% said they will now not buy an iPod Touch.”

Yeah, I'd say Apple are doomed by their successful product launch.

We will know soon enough if they have been harming other Apple sales. I doubt it. It would suspect that it has added extra sales from Apple users and attracted new Windows users to the brand, much like the iPhone did.

I agree with Amnesia. When someone starts using an Apple product it usually means they go on to buy other things. Dealt with a user a couple of months ago had an iPhone. He was a PC user and had not used a mac computer before but because of the iPhone he told me he was going to buy a Macbook. Good man I thought!

Of course my favourite saying is 'once you've had mac there's no going back' ;)

I'm the same - I bought the first MacBook, and now own a Book, Mini, iPhone and Time Capsule.

I also plan to get the new iPhone if it has a significant upgrade hardware wise. If it's just a sprucing up then I won't bother.
