The SDK is free. You could have a go at developing it then if it works it's £99 for the upgrade in program step to allow app store submission (which I might be able to help with)

See, if I was buying an app to listen to music on that I was able to control from my mac (like you re suggesting) then I'd want to be able to control it from the phone also.

Hmm...
Unless it's poss to write an app that purely uses the iTunes api and uses an iTunes UI api also i.e. duplicating iTunes and then write the wifi interface for the desktop side.
It may be possible to have a "run in the background" piece of (no nevermind, no APIs for that).
It would be nice if you could write a plugin to the actual iTunes app.

Yeah, IIRC the APIs didn't stretch to allowing control of programs over an open wifi connection in the background. I think the list was something like task completion, playing music, gps, push stuff and app switching. (Or something)

Okey doke. I know I had a quick play with the APIs, but nothing too serious and without an actual use-case. Shame!

Ah cool - I didn't realise there was only a charge if you want to upload to the store. Did you see the link I posted? There are two ways of controlling the iPod app - one way is through a UI element you can include in your app (to control music from the phone). The other is in code - using an object to interface between the iPod app and your app (to control music over a wireless connection). Absolutely - that would definitely be the nicest solution, on both ends! I don't think so either. The more thought I put into this, the more I'm starting to really want to give it a go!

It'd be nice if iTunes got Cocoa'd!

veency is available for jailbroken iphones. I wonder if a remote control app would make it through validation?

Couldn't you just set up a playlist on your iPhone and leave it playing? Or am I being too simplistic?

Well, I'm certain that it wouldn't be possible to write an official` equivalent - the APIs won't be available. This app wouldn't have the same functionality of course, but it seems to be a bit of a guessing game with Apple.
