What's happening to 24" monitors

Anyone know what's happening with 24" monitor resolutions. For a while after they first came out, the default resolution used to be 1920x1200. Nowadays almost all of them seem to be 1920x1080. Is this just to line up with HiDef or is something else going on?

Personally I would always have the extra depth on a screen, and simply have a black band top and bottom if watching a movie.

Cost saving.

It's cheaper to use the 1920x1080 panels as they're being mass produced for TV's etc.

You can still get 1920x1200 if you go for the slightly more expensive or business models.

I much prefer 16:10 monitors for PC work than 16:9.

I'm currently trying to decide between a 26 inch 16:10 and a 27 inch 16:9.

Main reason is due to declining visual acuity of middle age.

Any ideas/thoughts?

I much prefer 16:10 to 16:9; for 24" monitors the extra 120 pixels are very useful IMO.

Mine is 16x9 but it's 2048x1152. That's 48 pixels less vertically, but still 2.5% more pixels over all than 1920x1200 and I like it.

More pixels is better. For those without microscopic vision, you can always turn up the font size. My manager runs hers at about 300% on a 1920x1080 26" screen

I prefer 16:10, mainly because I work mainly with documents and web pages, so I need vertical resolution more than horizontal. But as has been said, True HD video is in, so the manufacturers are switching to 16:9. :(

I can fit 3 sheets of A4 side by side at 100%. That's plenty of "documents" for me.

At 100%, Word can't fit a single page vertically on the screen on a 16:10 Full HD display. :(

The new 27" displays, with the 2560 are a step up. I'd like one, but I spend 99% of my time, at home, on my laptop, so an external monitor isn't as useful, so I'm stuck with a Full HD display on the laptop.

I managed to get a 24" Full HD display at work this week, which is a big step up over the 19" I had before... But I'd have prefered a proper monitor, as opposed to a cut down TV...
