I think you might be on to something there. More wireless networks appeared in my listing too after I updated my newly acquired 12" PowerBook. I've yet to do the other 3 macs in the household. Mark

There‘s no mention of any changes to AirPort in the release notes, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tweaked. Can’t say I’ve noticed a difference though.

Peter, I've had the same experience; suddenly there are a dozen WLANs in my (Soviet-style prefab concrete) housing block visible to my iMac but not to my iTouch or my various Linux laptops. Now if 10.5.7 would only have fixed my Mail.app problems; the poor thing just can't handle 270 rules and a 6GB mail store....

270 rules—no wonder it can’t cope, but 6GB of Mail shouldn’t be a problem, unless you leave it all in your Inbox.

Just installed 10.5.7 using combo updater. Waited until my normal weekend maintenance and backup routine was done before installing. Must be getting paranoid in my old age.

Nah I'm doing the same. Going to carbon Copy Cloner my drive overnight then do the update tomorrow. IMO, doing a backup before doing an OS update isn't paranoia, it's a sensible precaution. In fact don't Apple advise it? Jon

Not sure about that. My normal maintenance routine is: Fresh start up/restart. Launch Onyx and let it do the SMART and system drive test. Do daily/weekly maintenance script (and monthly if necessary). Switch on external backup drive and check it with disc utility. Run SuperDuper (which conveniently repairs permissions before doing the backup) using the Smart update feature. Eject backup drive and power off. Time Machine also running so I have double backup. Should really get a second drive so I can take it off site.

Updated my Quad G5 yesterday using the combo updater (because I was still on 10.5.5) and it's been trouble free ever since, which is what I'd expect really.

Indeed they do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397of course, if you’re running Time Machine then your backup has already been done. By all means waste your time, but as I have said many times before, there is no need to manually run these scripts. Yes, in older versions of OS X they only ran at 3am when most people’s Macs were asleep or shutdown. That is no longer the case; they now run as necessary when the Mac is awake.

What is the method behind this Simon? Does anyone know? I'm not sure what to search for to find how Apple achieve this...

I believe Apple changed how the scripts were triggered—Google will tell you. You can tell when the scripts were last run by sticking this in Terminal:

Yep, jobs used to be run using cron but with Tiger Apple switched to launchd. However it was only in Leopard that it got launchd to automatically run the scripts in waking hours.

Hmmm, I knew they used to be cron and they had switched to launchd...Some research on this may satisfy my curiosity...
