I've finally managed to get round to streaming crap from my laptop to the PS3 via my Draytek 2710n router.
At the mo, have only tested audio but love the fact that every time I want to watch an episode of Big Bang Theory or Family Guy, I won't have to rummage around and look for the silly USB stick.
However, I have three questions:
1. Is there any security risk from having the PS3 as a media server? I want to ensure it doesn't compromise network security. 2. At the mo, it seems like the My Videos, My Pictures, and My Music folders are the ones that are being shared. However, I tend not to store much in these folders. Is there a way to select what files/folders are used? 3. What about external HDD? This is where most of my films/shows are stored and I'd like to stream from that if possible, without allowing access to the other files on there. 4. Is there anything else I need to consider that I haven't mentioned?
Thanks in advance.

How are you streaming it?
If you use media player then it can be a ballache to get setup properly.
If you use tversity then you can select files from any drive easily.

I use my mac as the streamer and the ps3 as the receiver as that's the one connected to my telly.
I'm not really bothered about security as it's all wpa2 and I couldn't give a monkeys if somebody went to all the hassle of cracking it as there's nothing all that worthwhile accessible on any of my computers. You'd get more useful information rooting through my bins.

pS3 is wired to router. Laptop wirelessly connected. WMP11 enabled shared files.

There's no problems security wise but I'd recommend using tversity for the media server to make it easier to share from the external hdd
