The title says it all really...

Doesn't need any bells or whistles, Office would be a big bonus, already have a monitor but will consider a bundle (but would prefer a printer) - and yes, its got to be from the high street as I'll be going out with her on the 20th to buy it and setup it up for her birthday...

Any, I've TCR, but my Mum (in MK) doesn't. I'm talking Dixons, PC World, Tescos, Aldi, etc...

Couldn't you order one from yoyotech or scan and get it delivered to her?

Or buy her a laptop instead.

Yeah, I hate to not be helpful, but I'm not sure any of us will be in a position to recommend anything from the highstreet. I would look at dell.co.uk/outlet for cheap PCs for people that don't care. Dell are usually pretty quiet too, as they only have one fan for everything.

Wooooah! I'm not buying it!   ;)

I've looked at some of the sub £400 machines on Scan, and perused Dell & Mesh, but despite my assurances she doesn't have much faith in online shopping - she likes a good haggle, and likes to be able to take things back the second they break - and I can understand that. She's not fussed on a laptop either - although I think she'd enjoy sitting in her conservatory browsing away...

Still, appreciated you lot aren't going to be keeping tabs on the chain shop's offers, so I guess I should rephrase the enquiry.

What should I expect to get for £4-500 these days? What's CPU range will I be looking at? Amount of memory? Integrated graphics seem an obvious route, but does Windows 7 need a bit more grunt for all its prettification? etc

I find it difficult to get over my issues with HP and PC World, but yeah, reasonably good value.

Aye, I don't think anyone should be going the Sandy route until the recall issue has been sorted.

I've seen all sorts of unlikely deals with Tesco and Argos recently (Argos are giving away 'cover' on some options) :o
