Well, today a strip of the touch screen on my phone has stopped working. Unfortunately it's the horizontal strip right where dialogue boxes require a tap to dismiss them.

Bugger.

At first I thought it might be my repair, and that perhaps a cable had come loose or something - but upon further investigation on the web this seems to be a really common problem, caused by drops. I did drop my phone shortly before noticing that the touch screen had stopped working properly (when I initially picked it up I just unlocked it and locked it again to check).

I'm doing a restore at the moment with faint hope that it might solve the problem, but I'm not expecting much...

My old iPhone 2G did the same thing. A horizontal strip about 1.5 cm across and about 1/3 of the way down the screen just stopped being touch sensitive.

I had a google and found lots of people with the same problem but I never tried to fix it.

From what I read it was a fairly expensive job (at the time).

Yeah, I've not had much of a look around the internet yet for a fix, but I do hope to find one - I'm just very busy at the moment, and I'm going away for a week soon so it'll be a couple of weeks until I'm able to try and find a fix.

JJ - I do have some tape, and that is something I will try. When it first happened I thought that perhaps a connection was working loose, but after a quick Google I do just think it's a coincidence that the touch panel has failed after I replaced the glass.

Hmm, watch this space!

I've volunteered my geek ability to a friend - they've shattered the glass on the front of their 3GS.
I've got the replacement digitiser/screen and a set of tools, but I'm just after some advice from folk that have done the op.
Any hints or tips, things to look out for?
Any particularly useful guides out there? I've googled a few, so I think I've got a fair idea of what I'm doing, but still...

Did the swap after work.
No display showed. :(
Apparently though, the display's come back this evening, but no touch input is registering. I have no idea why.
Bit of a let down, tbh.

After I did mine it developed a dead strip after a week or two.

Try re-seating the cables - that did the trick for mine. :-)
