And I don’t want to hear any nonsense about Combo updates. Just run Software Update.

Yes and it was problem free on both my machines.

I've downloaded the combo update and not had any problems.

I use combo updates for two reasons:
1) After an update breaks something, people often say "oh, go install the combo update and see if that fixes it" - why possibly break something when I can just get the combo update?
2) I've got two Macs, they both drag down several hundred meg for the updates, or I can just download one combo update and apply to both machines.

I've never used a combo update before.

I just let software update do it's thing.

Normally it will be security update stuff that comes automatically but if there's a big update due I'll go and start it myself.

Never had a problem with any of them.

Makes sense, if an update fails for whatever reason — rogue third-party software would be my bet — then reinstalling all updated components makes sense.

Equally, makes sense. Installing the combo is fine, but whereas there used to be a good reason for installing the Combo, Snow Leopard’s redesigned Software Update appears to have fixed the problems with incremental patches by yaking the system “offline” while installing the update.
