The 4770 is better for the price but its not better than a 4850, I have read through all the reviews.

Thanks for all the input, in the end he settled for the GTX260 Golden Sample, its a clocked up 260 with a better twin fan cooler.

At the time, late 2007, early 2008, an 8800GT with 1GB of ram was similar in performance to an 8800GTX once clocked so it was quite a high end card. He had tried my 4850 1GB in it at the end of last year and was seeing another 8-10 fps in the games he was playing, like company of heroes.

He isn't playing Crysis or anything that new, I negelcted to say though the GTX260 Golden Sample absolutely smokes Company of Heroes at 2560x1600, he benchmarked it, everything maxed and got 27 min, 64 max and 47 average.

Which makes it all a TOTALLY different proposition!

Glad he's sorted. I play CoH at 1920x1200 with a 7900GTX 512Mb. It's not the best, but it works really, really well at medium settings. I would imagine the golden sample would be awesome for that game.
